At a talk I presented to the Gonubie Garden Club last week, members were astounded by my vase full of Bromeliad flowers picked from our gardens and greenhouses. There were twenty different varieties, mostly Aechmeas but there were also a few Vrieseas and Guzmanias too. So lucky to live in an area with a mild winter climate where we can enjoy such beauty and colour in our gardens in the middle of winter.

Meet Aechmea recurvata var. benrathii.
A gorgeous, dwarf species from Brazil that forms small spiky rosettes of green foliage. The entire plant turns bright pink to red when it is about to bloom. They look great attached to a piece of decorative driftwood and also make very good rock garden subjects.

I never cease to be amazed by the effect light has on Bromeliads. Just take a look at these Cryptanthus Cascade. Identical plants, top photo, the plant is grown under bright indirect light while bottom photo the plant has been grown in more shade. Never say they were the same plants would you?
