Epoxy flooring systems are called “systems” because there is more than just the epoxy coating itself needed for a successful outcome. Primer is critical because it provides an intermediary, high-strength bonding layer.

So, always…

Use the correct primer.Mix the EXACT correct mix ratio and mix correctly.Don’t get in a hurry. If the directions say “mix for 5 minutes” ... mix for 5 minutes.Apply only under the correct conditions, temp, moisture, lighting, etc.Apply primer to the correct “Spread Ratio”

So What Makes A Great Epoxy Floor?

With all the hype of getting your floors coated with epoxy its frustrating to have a contractor come, disrupt your daily living but delivers a failed project.

Epoxy (resin) coatings widely used are a combination of a resin and a hardener/activator known as two parts epoxy systems. We have tried to put together a list of common mistakes made by contractors that lead to epoxy failures.(Not limited to these only though).

*Uncured Concrete substrate which still has a moisture content of more than 5% - the effect of this is that commonly used epoxy systems are not moisture tolerant and just as in anything that requires a chemical bond, the presence of water affects the chemical processes thereby weakening the bond. Without a good bond between your Epoxy Coating and the concrete substrate then your floor will flake off, crack when subjected to foot traffic and load.

Apart from uncured concrete,you get the case of water logging in an area to be coated. It can be rainy water or leaking pipe, the area affected has to be completely dry before attempting to coat. Still on the issue of wetness you get cases of recoating over epoxy that is still wet as a way to try to save time on application.

The wetness and moisture trapped in your floor will pop up and cause the aforementioned problems in your floor.

All substrates must be cured and free from moisture. All recoating must follow the correct application instructions taking note of recommended conditions and drying time.
