Jackson South Community Hospital undertook an ambitious expansion project in 2011, adding 172,700 square feet to the existing hospital, doubling the capacity of the facility to better serve South Miami-Dade residents' growing healthcare requirements. The 5.6-acre addition west of the old hospital increased the emergency room and surgical capabilities, as well as adding 60 new private patient rooms. Mikyoung Kim, an environmental designer, visual artist, and musician, was commissioned to create an outdoor garden that would aesthetically connect the two institutions. The artist was tasked with designing an area that would allow for fresh air, light exercise, therapeutic gardening, and covered seats for patients whose medications are damaged by sunshine. In addition, the artist was entrusted with including a 14' wall.
