The relationship between an organisation and its physical office has fundamentally shifted. Insights from the latest Gensler Global Workplace Survey highlights a clear reality for corporate environments - professionals no longer tolerate standard, unyielding spatial layouts. Yesterday, our team had the opportunity to brainstorm ideas to bridge this gap during a visit to the C.O Designs manufacturing plant and showroom in Cape Town.

C.O Designs holds a remarkable heritage in functional innovation. Founded in 1994 by Raymond Ellerbeck in Somerset West, the company began by reimagining home office furniture at a time when personal computers were first becoming household staples.

Their early breakthrough, The Box Office, was licensed to Makro in 1995, setting a long-term precedent for scalable, precision-led local manufacturing. Witnessing this automated engineering heritage firsthand was a powerful reminder of why technical craftsmanship is essential to successful corporate design.

Domani Vista's consultation rooms use glass partitions with black framing. Clients can see that other people are receiving services, which builds trust through social proof. But the visual separation and acoustic treatment ensure their own consultation remains private.

This matters more than most business owners realize. When someone books a consultation for aesthetic services, skincare, or wellness treatments, they want to know they're not the only one seeking that service. Seeing occupied consultation rooms removes the stigma of being "that person who needs help."

But they also need genuine privacy. The glass creates transparency without compromising confidentiality.

Consultation-based businesses - salons, clinics, professional services - often get this wrong by going too far in either direction. Fully closed rooms feel isolating. Fully open spaces feel exposed.

The bar at Domani Vista solves this by making products visible and accessible without requiring staff interaction. Everything sits at eye level. The layout is open enough to browse comfortably. The marble counter signals quality without creating intimidation.

Timber shelving adds warmth to what could otherwise feel clinical. Integrated lighting shows products clearly without glare. The design removes friction from the browsing process while keeping the purchase option obvious when customers are ready.

Average session time in retail directly correlates with revenue. When people feel comfortable exploring at their own pace, they stay longer. When they stay longer, conversion rates improve.

This is how retail psychology translates into spatial design decisions.
