LC Studio Experiences - with

This month shifted to a more personal note, one of invitation, intentional gatherings, learnings, and the building of cultural connections. As our focus leans currently within our creative studio practice and exploring our next visual language through experimentation, storytelling and offering we welcomed people across continents to gather around design, and pieces that spark conversation around the Art of textile making, unpacking the meaning behind our prints, our process and championing the making as opposed to the final product.

In our recent travel group visit we had the delight of welcoming into our textile experimental studio sharing a glimpse of our world in colour and patterns with textile design lovers from all around the globe. It’s so beautiful to witness how things are unfolding circling back to what they were supposed to be, educating, connecting through design and witnessing unity brought about by a shared understanding as well as an appreciation for the craft.

Over the last couple of months we took the time to reflect on our next steps at Lulasclan, we had hit a much needed pause, faced with growth challenges that called for an inward reflection to guide us back to our North Star.

The truth is starting a business is easy and might even look like it’s all glamourous and well put together, but what goes on behind it all, in keeping it going and ensuring that the doors remain open, and jobs are secured amidst volatile factors such as global and economical challenges, consumer purchase behavioural changes, and making designer pieces right here at home had really stretched us to a breaking point.

While we approach our 10 year mark, we realised in order to create an impact to cutapilt the African design language and story we so much want to share with the world, we needed to go back to learning and not the drawing board of creating and releasing another collection as a quick solve, but to really peel back the layers and allow ourselves to transition into a space that is uncomfortable, and requires absolute vulnerability, and intentionality.

The ventures foundation was our divine intervention, over the last 2 days we engaged with some of Africa’s treasured minds, expert panel of mentors and stepped into a room where we could unpack and collaboratively solve each designer-led businesses pain point.

Within the room there was a shared stand out common goal that we all want Africa to win, that we want to create an impact in the world, to document our cultural heritage stories and create world class sustainable businesses, that not only looked premium but had the solid foundations, systems and infrastructure that can contribute to support future creatives and pioneers of the world.

While the dust is still settling, we walk away with so much knowledge, where we felt stuck, we’ve found practical solutions, where we thought was the end, we’ve found a fresh revived spirit and direction, a big thank you to for your hospitality and imparted knowledge and all the partners, and esteemed panel of experts for your shared contribution.

Our print of the day is one that embraces both the masculine and feminine forms through shape a harmonious balance brings forth a pattern that plays on strength and gentleness and aptly named Kganya a Setswana name and word meaning “light / Shine”.

Celebrating our friends in design at the opening of .capetown , we had a first glance at The Totemic Exhibition displayed at .gallery nestled within the beautiful Cape Heritage hotel.

Our first night saw the works of and a beautiful display of pieces expressing the embodiment of the spirit of The Totemic Field, pieces that hold memory, intention and the trace of many voices. There was a presence of old meeting new through shapes, materials and architectural forms and a display of how African design brings a contemporary touch to the spaces we envision and create.

Patterns aren't built, they are grown.

Behind every Lulasclan pattern is a journey of exploration, growth and discovery.

We believe mastery is something you grow into, in order to allow ideas to evolve, opening space for new colours, new possibilities to exist.

Right now, we're present, in the joyful phase of the process, experimenting with colour and watching the patterns slowly come to life in a way that feels true. From the first Artboard inspired by the colour trend we are obsessing over right now, olives, plum and Banana to how ever many other Iterations that may be born, its a practice of patience, and immersing once self in the journey of each shade, shape and form.

Because the most beautiful patterns we create are the ones that surprise us.
