Rennie Scurr Adendorff Architecture, Heritage, Interior Design We nurture relationships with our clients, both individuals and organisations, and take pride in what we do.

We see architecture as a business as well as an art, and ensure that we work with, and not merely for, our clients to achieve the best value and most creative building solutions. Only by fully understanding our clients and their needs are we able to create designs that meet both requirements and desires.

We started this rebrand journey in 2019 with an amazing group of designers and project managers. (RSA, Superunion & Uphondo). South Africa is now starting to see the roll out of second largest fuel network in SA (850+ Caltex stations).

South Africa has a proud soccer history and Garden Village AFC is the home of many prominent football administrators and players who are still active in football today. RSA was privileged to help build into this legacy and assist pro bono in designing the new extention to the club house.

Our architecture and interiors are project specific and defined by the context and brief, as opposed to a signature style. This is the 5th project we have completed with this client and each development has a distinct design and aesthetic approach. We worked closely with each other to creatively interpret and practically resolve the vision and the spatial, climatic, environmental and architectural concerns.

Sophisticated style, state-of-the-art features and generous proportions are the keynotes of this ultra-modern home. Designed for relaxed living and easy entertaining, the open plan living areas flow seamlessly to a spacious pool terrace with all rooms maximizing the city and mountain views.. The sculptural double-volume glassed stairwell and leafy courtyard form the core of the house to flood natural light into the space.

We had a great team working on Ph1 of the Mount Nelson Hotel security upgrades. The brief was to design a state of the art entry control system which needed to be architecturally sensitive to the style of the hotel and historic gateway. The solid concrete "bunker" with 80mm bullet proof glass was crafted to look like the old guard station and used architectural mouldings of the hotel’s era to create a guard house that lives comfortably at this historic entrance. The landscaping hides sophisticated electronics and pneumatic bollards. The guard house and fence are painted dark grey so as "disappear" and foreground the historic entry arch and views up the avenue. The team are now busy with Ph2 and Ph3.

Rather than demolishing the existing 2 storey house which sat 4 meters up off a raised concrete shaft, the new owner-built house was extended by wrapping the existing core with a new off shutter concrete skin. A new basement level was formed, which like a ship’s bow, sails out towards the street. The basement living with sunken courtyard, raised the sloped garden to form a new ground floor garden terrace. Slots were cut into the concrete shaft to insert a steel staircase and flood natural light down from above. This new “skin” created a 4m high glazed ground floor lounge, dining and kitchen area which opened onto the new garden, spacious first floor en-suite bedrooms and a top floor accommodating a glass rimed flow pool with a second living area and study, capturing breath-taking city and mountain views.

The existing proposed Grade II Provincial Heritage Site with its solid wall architecture, outdated theatre design, compartmentalised separation of theatre, teaching, front and back of house, needed to be completely reimagined and reconfigured to actively engage as a contemporary and public space.

At the core of the concept was a need for “porosity” between the cultural institution and the public realm. In an inversion of the traditionally enclosed “black box” theatre design, transparency was put at the core of the building. Large sections of the facade are glazed to allow the public to see inside the building, watch performances or rehearsals and provoke conversation. Finishes were kept relatively simple and complementary to the mix of various materials already on campus. Copper was chosen for durability and its capacity to be a living artwork turning slowing green as it ages over time.

Unlike professional theatres, the building incorporates a pedagogical role: technical spaces were designed to allow pupils to learn about lighting, sound and stage engineering design. Spaces needed to be flexible to be reconfigured for many different uses to ensure this becomes a hub of learning and experimentation.

The project demonstrates how a simple architectural idea such as a large window can integrate the sidewalk and the street, tear down social divides, embrace culture rather than making it exclusive, encourage conversations and make a positive impact on the local community. It is a project that is designed specifically to enable people to come together.

The theatre has become a symbol of the University’s commitment to change and is the centenary gift to the town of Stellenbosch. The previous name, HB Thom, remains written above the entrance door as a marker in time and re-named the Adam Small Theatre to celebrate inclusivity and acknowledges greatness.

Following the successful launch of C&CO, Baraka Retail Group commissioned RSA and Superunion to design JOOJ which opened its doors in City Stars and Mall of Egypt. By end of 2019, 10 JOOJ stores will open in Egypt, and 3 stores between the UAE and KSA.

As seasonal change influences fashion trends, Jooj’s interior responds by constantly evolving. With no shopfront, there is a seamless transition from the mall into the store, allowing customers to familiarize with the new lighting, smells, music, and the visual stimulation in this “decompression zone”.

The revolving display walls resemble art gallery exhibitions with a mix of merchandise and graphics which are changed constantly to the new trends or season. These vertical elements are placed at angles to increase customer sightlines and expose the merchandise deeper in the store and invites more movement and better customer circulation.

Clients rotate around the circular point of sale island where consultations, payment, information and pause seating take place. This sense of new discovery and seasonal change is echoed in the modular grid display walls. The joinery grid simplifies inventory control, maximises storage capacity and its modular system allows easy store role out.

Packaging is colour coded and can be arranged to form playful patterns and designs or bold blocks of colour. The display is not one dimensional but rather a three dimensional approach with sunglasses either recessed into the grid wall in “showcases” or displayed on large pop out panels. Mirrors and graphics further add to this dynamic layering of vertical space.

The word “display” comes from the French word “deployer”, which means “to unfold.” The concept of Jooj is to “unfold” a series of product stories, to create a sense of discovery and a mix of thoughtful moments as the seasons change.

Libraries have changed in nature from silent book repositories, to extensions of home lounges and gathering spaces. In partnership with the City of Cape Town (architecture division) and RSA (interior), the Dunoon community library was officially opened on Friday by the mayor. This center provides multi-use spaces for the various users and is a hub for individuals to gain access to technology and information that otherwise is not available in this area. We are grateful to have been a part of this project which will impact the Dunoon residents and make a difference for generations to come.
