St. Cyprian’s School Life Centre, Oranjezicht, Cape Town, 2012.

The space inside the building develops the idea of Archaic Space generated by precise geometry both in plan and section.

The school needed a flexible space that could be used for educational exercises during teaching periods and double up as a sports pavillion and rehersal space after hours.

St. Cyprian’s School Molteno House Extensions, Oranjezicht, Cape Town, 2008.

The space is considered a sensor of new forms. By practicing doing, the student-inhabitant becomes the actor of a process of construction of a body of knowledge, becoming its interpreter.

The extensions weave between existing trees. In so doing, the value of the natural landscape is given precedence over architecture - an important lesson the school wanted its pupils to learn.

St. Cyprian’s School New IT Hub, Oranjezicht, Cape Town, 2008.

The way we perceive school space has changed in recent years, shifting from a standard place of teaching to one where people live and learn, and which they thus inhabit.

The students experience the condition of being in the space by relating with it; it is maintained that environments for play and learning adequately represent the private and personal, intitutional and public dimensions, so according to this concept, the educational quality of an animated environment ensure continuity between the socio-spatial system and the child’s activities.

St. Cyprian’s School New Knowledge Centre, Oranjezicht, Cape Town, 2008.

To introduce a sense of possibility into the space means to favour users with the principle of usefulness and choice of action.

The circular shape and wood material guide users and steer their behaviour in an arbitrary process, often unintentional.

We put forward the idea of a democratic school, as the space of everyday life, of philosophy, where critical thinking skills can be developed, recalling the need to establish a different form of access to information based on processes of sharing and cooperation and aiming at the psychophysical well-being of students.

Community Day Care Clinic, Cape Town, 2017.

The clinic is part of a programme to bring good medical care to underserved and economically distressed communities in the greater Cape Town region. These clinics act as intermediary healthcare spaces between the community/household and hospital care. It is estimated that the clinic will see up to 750 patients daily. The three key diseases at present in the area are COVID19, TB, and HIV/AIDS.

The precedent for the building was taken from a careful study of Berthold Lubetkin's Finsbury Health Centre in London which provides many clues as to how to create a community clinic. What was fundamental was Lubetkin's assertion that the Health Centre or Clinic was an important new building type and should be accorded the same value as a civic building, such as a town hall.

The Red Location Library and Archive, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, 2011.

The idea is that the building will evoke memories and associations with the ark, timber caskets and treasure chests. The external treatment of the buildings seeks to emphasise these connections.

The archive is attached to the library and will house the archives of the main city library, as well as the library’s collection of Struggle Literature. The archive will form an important part of the museum’s programme of research.

The Art Gallery was awarded the Icon Magazine building of the year in 2014.

The Red Location Museum of the People’s Struggle, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, 2005.

South Africa is a country with a tumultuous history marked by the striving of various groups to be free.

The lesson of the Museum is that freedom should never come at the expense of any other group of people.

The Red Location Museum of the People’s Struggle was awarded an Eastern Cape Award of Merit, a national Award of Merit and an Award of Excellence by the South African Institute of Architects in 2009. The Museum was awarded the inaugural Lubetkin Prize and an International Award by RIBA in 2007, a World Leadership Prize in 2007 and a Dedalo Minosse Prize in Italy in 2007.
