Projects in the pipeline - a bold geometric proposal for a Day Activity Hub at a well known Winelands Farm. The central congregation space is framed by a circular curved concrete roof structure which protects against the elements and provides a cool respite from the heat. Plants are cascading off the landscaped roofs and provide natural insulation at the same time.

The exciting clean and uncluttered interiors of the Charles Library, Temple University, Philadelphia. I was surprised about the amount of glass and hard terrazzo floors for acoustic issues, but it seems the ceilings adequately made up for it. A very pleasant university building.

The Charles Library at Temple University by Snohetta Architects. 2019. It is located at a busy pedestrian crossroads on the campus and the two large curvy “Emmental cheese” cutaways, signal entrance in a dramatic fashion. The lower portion a dark black box with punctured cutouts and the top portion a illuminated glass extrusion which peeps over the black box in places. There is also a roof deck and planted roof gardens. The theme is carried through inside with carved out interior spaces, and spatial juxtapositions and double volumes, all linked by beautiful staircases and with views over the campus. A great university building of our time.

A gloomy last day of archi site seeing. The Frank Lloyd Wright designed Beth Sholom Synagogue 1959. The entire roof is of an opaque translucent sheeting - I could not get in but could get a glimpse of this magical interior space under the large skylight/lantern, from peeping through the front doors. SA architects such as APS Conradie’s Dutch Reform Churches from the 1960’s, clearly reference this “style” with its triangulated forms and ornamentation. These later works of Wright are not my favorite but I must say this roof is quite something. It consist of thick translucent sheeting without any insulation underneath, so possibly quite hot in summer.

I.M.Pei’s National Art Gallery Extension from 1978 is a very interesting building, and deserves the honors bestowed on it. Two triangles are intersecting in plan to make up the complex geometries. I loved the boldness of interplay between “solid” and “void”. Difficult to compare, but this one is not big box architecture like the Adjaye one up the road.

The Smithsonian Museum for the African American History and Culture by David Adjaye Bond Group and Smith Architects, 2016 - located on the Mall in Washington DC. A rather strange austere building wrapped in a copper mesh which makes it impossible to look out from, which is strange, given the fact that all the vertical circulation are next to the facades on the outside and the galleries in black boxes inside. The rather large entrance canopy is an interesting architectural gesture but seems wonky and over-scaled to match the rest of the Mall itself. Everything in DC seems to have to be monumental and over scaled to symbolize power. I found this building fairly disappointing, but its content very interesting.
