๐ธโจ JUNE GARDENING GUIDE โจ๐ธ
Despite the cooler temperatures, June offers plenty of crisp, sunny days that are ideal for garden upkeep. Shorter daylight hours donโt mean less gardeningโjust smarter planning! Take advantage of those bright winter mornings to care for your plants and prepare for springโs burst of colour.
๐ฌ๏ธ Winter-Proofing Your Garden
โ๏ธ Protect frost-sensitive plants: Cover tender plants with frost cloth or hessian, and mulch around the base to insulate the roots. Remember: even a light frost can damage new growth.
๐งค Wrap young tree trunks in hessian or frost fleece in extremely cold areas to avoid cracking.
๐ Make Use of Fallen Leaves
Autumn leaves are gold for gardeners! Start a compost heap using dry leaves and kitchen scraps. Add an organic compost activator and keep it moist. Microorganisms will do the rest.
๐ชท Divide and Conquer
Nowโs a great time to divide hardy perennials like daylilies and agapanthus to fill empty spots or share with friends.
๐ง Watch for Waterlogged Soil
In areas with poor drainage, soggy soil can lead to root rot. Apply a soil fungicide like Efekto Virikop to help prevent this.
๐ Winter Pests Are Still Active
๐ Wax scale insects are out and about. They hide under waxy shells, feeding on plant sap. Treat with Plant Protector or Oleum, and repeat if needed.
๐ชฐ Look out for aphids, cutworm, and snailsโespecially on seedlings. Use organic sprays, cutworm bait, or Sluggem/Sluggit to protect your plants.
๐ FRUIT TREE CORNER ๐
Harvest any remaining apples, citrus, and pears. Store in a cool, dry place and check regularly for rot.
๐ Strawberries can be planted now, but protect young flowers in frost-prone areas.
๐ชต Clear fallen fruit beneath trees to avoid pest infestations.
๐ณ Feed citrus trees still bearing fruit with Protek Flower Power and guano pelletsโtheyโre heavy feeders in winter.
๐ชฐ Start fruit fly treatments by spraying Margaret Roberts Organic Insecticide weekly on the lower canopy or trunk.
๐น WINTER FLOWER GARDEN ๐ผ
๐ธ Sow poppies, sweet peas, calendula, violas, pansies, and wildflowers now for beautiful winter blooms.
๐ฟ Plants that are flowering need a boost. Feed pots and beds with Atlantic Flower & Fruit fertiliser for long-lasting colour.
๐บ Roses can be planted nowโuse a quality rose mix and Atlantic Root Builder. Feed existing bushes with Colourburst Rose Food, and spray with Rosecare Plus to keep pests and diseases at bay.
โ๏ธ Deadhead pansies, snapdragons, and stocks to encourage more flowers.
๐ผ Prune hydrangeas, but only cut stems that flowered last season. Feed with Wonder Shake โn Grow Pink or Blue, depending on your colour preference.
๐บ Azaleas showing colour? Begin spraying with Efekto Virikop to guard against fungal diseases and feed with Colourburst Azalea compost.
๐ณ In warmer zones, lightly prune and shape shrubs. Wait until July/August in colder areas.
๐ธ Divide perennials like dahlias, wild iris, agapanthus, and delphiniums.
๐ฟ INDOOR PLANT CARE ๐ฟ
๐ชด Droopy indoor plants? Feed with Nitrosol when watering to perk them up.
๐ฑ Repot plants in tight containers using fresh potting mix and Wonder Organic Vita-Boost.
๐ฆ A dose of liquid kelp helps plants resist indoor stress and boosts immunity.
๐ธ Orchids that flower in cooler months love a mid-winter feedโtry Pokon Orchid Food.
๐ฅฆ WINTER VEGGIE GARDEN ๐ฝ

๐ฅ Beetroot, radishes, carrots

๐ Spray Margaret Roberts Organic Insecticide every 7โ10 days for aphids and caterpillars.
๐ Stop snail attacks with Sluggem or Sluggit.
๐ฆ Control powdery mildew on pumpkins and squashes with neem oil sprays.
๐ฑ WINTER LAWN CARE
๐ Watch for harvester termitesโtreat with Kamikaze or Termite Stop.
๐ฆ Feed lawns in warmer regions with Fertilawnโthey grow slowly but still need nutrition.
