It’s time to actively participate in WeedBuster Week (October 8-13) by identifying and removing invasive alien plants from your garden.

Of the estimated 9 000 plants introduced to our country, 198 are currently legally classified as invasive. It is estimated that these plants cover about 10% of the country surface and the problem is growing at an exponential rate. More than 7% of all water run-off is lost to invasive alien plants. If left alone, invasive plants could eventually use as much as 20 percent of South Africa's annual run-off.

Spot and remove these Category 1 (CARA) invaders from your gardens: Lantana (Lantana camara); bugweed (Solanum mauritianum); Mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) and balloon vine (Cardiospermum grandiflorum).

The Syzygium cordatum is the 2012 tree of the year. This tree is also commonly known as the Waterbessie in afrikaans or the Waterberry in English. It grows up to 11m in height as well as in width, depending on where it is planted. It has a lovely dense rounded canopy and is evergreen and fairly hardy. Due to the fact that it is generally found growing in the wild near streams and swampy areas it requires a fair amount of water and is tolerant to damp bog conditions. During the flowering and fruiting season it attracts birds and insects.
