Miss Green fingers has created little spots of paradise in the Eastern Cape too!
Take a look how the barren land has been transformed over the years....through hard work and lots of love. Plants are chosen for this particular climate, which means summer rains and must be frost resistant.

My daughter's bougainvillea is flowering. It's crept all the way up the poplar trees nearby. What a beautiful expression of colour.
Sometimes a little benign neglect goes a long way with bougainvillea.

Cotinus coggygria is well known by many common names, including Smoke Bush after its prolific, fluffy flowers. It is a large, deciduous shrub species with a bushy growth.
Flowers are feathery and arranged in spherical clusters at the top of the plant, they are pink in colour, fading over time to a greyish shade.

This is an example flowering currently in my garden. A beautiful addition in a winter garden.

Cyrtanthus elatus, the Scarborough lily, is a bulbous flowering plant which originates from the Cape Province of South Africa. Other common names are fire lily and George lily. Cultivars of the Scarborough lily have flowers which may be bright red, orange, yellow, or occasionally pink or white.
Was originally called Valotta.
These make quite a show in a pot or summer garden, when the rest of the garden is fading.

Crinums are members of the family Amaryllidaceae and have a very wide distribution in the tropics of Asia, Africa and America, extending into the warm temperate parts of both hemispheres. 23 species of Crinums are found in southern Africa. Most species have flowers in shades of white or pink and the name Crinum is derived from the Greek krinon, meaning ‘white lily’. Crinums produce fleshy, irregularly shaped seeds that are covered with a waterproof seed coat. They germinate immediately upon ripening.

We have been spending some time at our cottage outside Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape. These flowers are called Flamingo Glow and are popping up in my garden. They are drought and frost resistant and truly a spectacular addition to a water wise garden.
