Designing with Storylines

In every project, especially social and civic projects, there is always a storyline. A narrative that should resonate with the people who will inhabit and use the space.

Currently, in a township establishment project, I have gone back to speak with residents about the names of roads, halls, and shops that already exist. This is not just about urban planning but showing regard and ensuring we do not erase the history that defines a community.

One road was named after an unborn child lost during the fight for housing. A hall carries the name of an activist who stood firm in protest when families were chased away from the site. These stories are powerful reminders that architecture is about people, memory, dignity, and identity.

Through these conversations, we now know the imagery that will shape our signage, street furniture, and the overall character of this scheme. I can already see it in my inner eye, an environment that carries forward the community’s spirit and story.

As architects and built environment professionals, we must always remain in touch with the emotions and perspectives of those we design for. It is this human connection that makes our work truly meaningful.

Sometimes, the most fulfilling reward is not the project fee but the lives dignified and stories preserved through our work.

People-Centred Township Development in Progress
We are excited about a transformative new township project rooted in dignity, access, and sustainability. The concept follows a precinct-based approach:
Civic Precinct: Anchored by a school, creche, clinic, and multipurpose centre.
Business Precinct: Supports formal/informal trade and a taxi drop-off hub.
Residential Precinct: A mix of BNG, social housing, and First Home Finance units.
Our design responds to real community needs, balancing public, semi-public, and private spaces for safety and functionality. Importantly, community gardens, open parks, and safe play areas are not optional extras, they are essential to promoting health, social cohesion, and quality of life.
Sustainability goes beyond buildings but a convergence between bylaw enforcement, waste management, and ongoing maintenance result in a long-term dignity and liveability.
Urban design must support people’s lives, today and tomorrow.

Why Banks Should Include Child-Friendly Spaces

As I sat waiting for my turn to see a consultant at the bank, a child ran joyfully among the customers, laughing and playing with their siblings. The moment stood out — a burst of pure happiness in an otherwise rigid space. It made me wonder: Why don’t banks have spaces that welcome children?

As an architectural professional, I believe every public space should consider the full range of people who use it — including children. Banks are typically designed for transactions and efficiency, not comfort or inclusivity. But that approach is outdated.

The Current Experience
For many parents, visiting the bank with children is unavoidable. Yet these spaces often lack seating or distractions for kids, making the visit stressful. Children are expected to behave like adults, and parents are left to manage the tension.

Why Child-Friendly Design Matters
Creating spaces that accommodate children is not just kind — it's smart design. Here's why:

Improved Customer Experience: Parents can focus on their business when children are safely engaged.

Human-Centered Design: Thoughtful design respects every user, not just adult ones.

Community Connection: Welcoming families reflects a bank’s commitment to serving its whole community.

Safety and Efficiency: Play areas help contain movement, improving safety and reducing distractions.

Brand Loyalty: Customers remember places that made them feel considered and respected.

Simple Design Ideas
Play Corners: Small, colorful areas with toys, books, or games.

Digital Play Screens: Low-cost, educational entertainment for kids.

Child-Friendly Furniture: Soft seating at child height near consultation zones.

Visual Wayfinding: Fun signs and decals that guide and delight.

A More Inclusive Future
Spaces shape experiences. As banks evolve, they must reflect the diversity of those who walk through their doors. That includes children. A child laughing in a bank shouldn’t be an anomaly — it should be a sign of a space doing its job well.

It’s time for banks to design with families in mind. Because joy and comfort have value too.

Exceptional Service from the Pietermaritzburg Deeds Office!
I had an outstanding experience requesting a copy of my property Title Deeds. Sent an email on Tuesday at 14:19, received a response the next day, made a payment of R199, and had a copy in my inbox this morning. The efficiency and quick turnaround time truly impressed me—kudos to the team!
🔹 Property Owners, Take Note!
If you're planning to develop or repurpose your property, having a copy of your Title Deeds is essential for municipal development applications. Whether your property is fully paid off or still under bond, your bank should provide you with a copy. Stay prepared and ensure you have this crucial document on hand.
