The loofah fruits from the black seeds are more rough and have deeper lines than those from the white seeds.

We have planted the white seed loofah plants out but it is as if they are not quite settled and therefore are not bearing fruits yet.

When I planted the small loofah plants, it was on a quite windy part of our hill, so I protected the little plants from the wind by putting beer crates around them. Later, I planted stronger ones in the same row without putting beer crates for protection. The interesting thing is that the plants without protection grabbed onto the net immediately whereas those with protection simply started growing around the crates and on the ground. Here you can see the ones which didn't grab onto the net (Photo 1 and 2 - I've now removed the crates to see what they will do) and the ones that grabbed on from the start (Photo 3 and 4). The last photo is a new function for our Christmas tree. It will be full of loofah leaves soon.

So my lesson: plants will protect themselves. That is what they do.

Eventually! They found and grabbed onto the shade net. Can't wait for the loofahs to appear.

We sell seeds with an added instruction card on how easy it is to grow these babies. The plants make you smile when you see them climb and the actual loofah has so many benefits - cleaning pots and tough greasy spots, a shower spunge which exfoliates your skin and make for great cases.

A not-so-baby marrow from our garden. Nyam! I absolutely love eating from our garden and look forward to the day where we don't have to go to the shop for anything other than milk and meat. And biltong.

In the beginning we planted two seeds per pot in case one does not grow. It turned out that all grew. We then removed the weakest loofah plant from the pot and left the other to grow. Or so I thought. The other admin of our LoofahMoon Garden overlooked a few pots 😏 so now I've turned it into an experiment to see the fighting spirit of loofah plants and planted them out together.

Loofah planting day. At first we plant the loofahs in loose soil mixed with red sand in small pots. When they are big enough we transplant them into the ground. I have planted loofahs right around our fence where there are loads of different types of soil. From rocky, to clay-y, to very wet soil right next to the river. Over the next few weeks we will see which grows best.

From seed to the first little luffa appearing on the vines! The plants have two different flowers. One is a male cluster of flowers that pollinate the individual larger flowers which then turn into the loofah fruits. It has taken about two months to establish and will only properly start climbing in a few weeks. They will then start producing between 10 and 30 fruit on the vines which can grow up to 15 meters long. This is why luffas need a strong structure to climb on as the fruit can get very heavy.
