Cross-sectional diagram of a traditional "mud bed" or thick-bed tile installation. This method is a classic technique used to create a perfectly level and stable surface for floor tile, especially over uneven wood subfloors.
Here is a breakdown of each layer and its function:

LAYER-BY-LAYER BREAKDOWN
• Subfloor: The foundation of the assembly, shown here as wooden planks or plywood supported by joists. It must be structurally sound and securely screwed down to prevent movement.
• #15 Felt Paper: Also known as tar paper, this acts as a cleavage membrane. It prevents the wood subfloor from absorbing moisture from the wet mortar and ensures that the mortar bed can expand and contract independently of the wood (decoupling).
• Diamond Lath: This is a expanded metal mesh. Its primary job is to provide mechanical reinforcement for the mortar bed. It acts like "rebar" for the mud, helping to prevent the mortar from cracking under stress.
• Mortar (The "Mud Bed"): This is a thick layer (typically 3/4" to 1.5" thick) of "dry-pack" mortar, which is a mix of portland cement and sand. Unlike runny concrete, it has the consistency of damp sand, allowing the installer to slope it for drainage or level it perfectly.
• Thinset: A thin layer of adhesive mortar (thin-set) applied with a notched trowel. This creates the final bond between the hardened mortar bed and the tile.
• Tile: The decorative and durable top surface, set into the thinset.

WHY USE THIS METHOD?
While many modern DIY projects use cement backer board because it is faster and easier, the mud bed method shown in the image is still favored by professionals for several reasons:
• Perfect Leveling: It allows you to fix a floor that is severely out of level.
• Custom Slopes: It is the standard for walk-in showers where the floor must slope toward a drain.
• Rigidity: It creates a very stiff, "rock-solid" floor that minimizes the flex that causes grout lines to crack.
