We have been working with MDF for years as it is a great product, the best sheet material by far! It does have one drawback though, it can absorb water and swell. This is why we also supply and advise using our own Artisan WaterProof MR MDF which is an imported specialist moisture resistant MDF. After many years in the industry it became apparent there was a need for a better material for architectural mouldings. In South Africa the main two timber species used are SA Pine and Meranti. However, in the US, UK and Europe MDF is widely used as it is a sustainable renewable resource. SA Pine is a great softwood, but it is unstable. It can bend & warp and the knots will weep for many years, ruining the paint finish. Meranti is a precious hardwood. Meranti is a commercial name given to four groups, differing in colour and weight. More than half of the species are listed by IUCN as critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable. MDF is a man made product, made from waste from sawmills etc. It is very sustainable, stable and economical. Our MDF skirtings out-perform both Pine and Meranti in these regards.
