Almost 10 years ago, Natasha van Zyl and her family tore out their lawn, filled in their swimming pool, and began planting fruit trees, vegetables and herbs until their property became a thriving 'food forest' right in the heart of Cape Town.

VanZylStead is hosting an open day on Saturday, 29 November at 10h00 in Durbanville, Cape Town. Numbers are limited so booking is essential.

Through VanZylStead, Natasha shares their trials and errors in growing their own fruits and vegetables, processing their produce, cooking food from scratch, and living greener, healthier lives - from the fruits of their labour.

While experienced in composting, Natasha is new to her YOLO Compost Tumbler journey. She was drawn to our YOLOs for their suitability to small gardens and urban settings, convenient use, and pest-proof features.

Natasha also has a superb newsletter that you can subscribe to from her website. It has plant and growing insights with DIY recipes for cleaning, composting, and homemade solutions. www.vanzylstead.com

You know how it is when you plan to do one quick task and end up refurbishing the garden? That's what happened to me yesterday evening. I planned to just empty the nutrient-rich compost from my YOLO Compost Tumbler and ended up emptying a raised bed, sifting and mixing the soil using my YOLO Garden Sieve, and refilling the raised bed.

Last week we supplied a replacement pipe to Linda and noticed from our records that she bought her large YOLO in October 2018; it is almost 7 years old.

"Can you believe it - 7 years! Don't know what I would have done without our YOLO," she replied.

Early YOLOs had powder-coated frames and pipes. Sitting in the humid environment of the tumbler shell and exposed to moist materials, after a number years those pipes can rust. Fortunately pipes can easily be replaced. For the last few years, the frames and pipes have been hot-dip galvanized to improve their longevity.

Before tossing butternut ends, carrots, apple cores, cucumber ends, bits of ginger and beetroot into your YOLO Compost Tumbler, keep these aside to make a 'Compost Cake'.

This recipe, by Tom Hunt from The Guardian, uses 300g of kitchen cuttings and peelings that would ordinarily go into your YOLO Compost Tumbler in a delicious cake.

"The compost bin is more than a place for leftovers, it’s a source of inspiration, as well as a way to reflect on what we waste; it can even guide us towards cooking more resourcefully and creatively," Hunt says.

If you give this recipe a try, let us know what scraps you used and how it came out.
