Metrosideros excelsa variegata
"New Zealand Christmas Tree"

A lovely slow growing evergreen shrub/small tree with striking, leathery, variegated foliage, which bears beautiful clusters of bright red/crimson "bottlebrush" type flowers in the summer.
Hardy and wind-tolerant, these shrubs make excellent hedges and screens.

Size: up to 3-4m tall x 2-3m wide
Position: Full sun to part shade
Soil: Well-drained, sandy, slightly alkaline
Water: Regularly until established. Twice per week, or keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Relatively drought-tolerant thereafter. Once per week.
Fertilizer: Apply a good, well-balanced, slow release fertilizer at the time of planting and reapply once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
Pruning: Trim back or cut to shape after flowering, in late summer or autumn. Responds well to shaping.

With winter approaching, now is the perfect time to provide a little extra care for the wonderful wild birds in our town.
Encouraging birds into the garden has a multitude of benefits! Besides bringing joy with their beauty and song, birds help with:

- Natural pest control. As more birds feel comfortable in your space, eating all the little insects, larger species may be attracted to the area, reducing rodent populations, and therefore lowering the chances of a snake slithering in for a meal!
- W**d management. Ground-feeding seed-eaters help to keep w**d seeds under control.
- Soil aeration. Ground-feeding omnivorous species such as the lovely Cape Robin-Chat, love to scratch around in the dirt for beetles, ants, and the like, improving soil aeration and water absorption.
- Fertilization, pollination and seed dispersal.
- Encouraging healthy biodiversity!

Great ways to attract more birds into your garden are:

Planting indigenous species, to provide food and shelter
Installing bird feeders with fruit, suet, mealworm or nectar, birdhouses for nesting, and a birdbath as a safe water source.
