I am a fully qualified and registered architectural professional now working out of the Central Drakensberg region. Architecture is a great combination of my passion and talents; I love being creative, problem solving and interacting with people. A

lthough I enjoy all aspects of architecture I especially enjoy residential projects, I think it is a real privilege to work closely with clients to achieve a space that works perfectly for their individual needs. I find renovations especially interesting and I am always struck by how even the smallest positive changes can make a huge difference to a space and the lives of those living in it. I believe that good design is worth investing in, especially in an environment as beautiful as the central Drakensberg region, beautiful spaces deserve beautiful places. Architectural Education:

2008 - Bachelor of Architectural Studies, University of Cape Town
2010 - Honours, Bachelor of Architectural Studies, University of Cape Town
2011 - Masters in Architecture (Professional), University of Cape Town

House almost complete in Cathkin Estate, Central Drakensberg.

The site views are truly spectacular but the location comes with some harsh environmental realities which need to be balanced.
You want to be able to appreciate the views but to be cocooned in a home that is comfortable and practical within the environment.

To achieve this the design incorporates passive environmental design strategies; windows facing the mountain that are framed to shade from the harsh western sun, north facing windows let in plenty of light and warmth in winter but will be shaded by roof overhangs in summer.

This house is available for purchase from the developer.

You can now purchase ready built houses in the Drakensberg direct from the Cathkin Estate developer. My Intunja unit (pictured below) is currently under construction and will be ready later in 2019. Follow the link above for more information.

The first house in this exciting project is by a very talented Cape Town architect. It has been really interesting seeing it come to life as I helped with the on site management of the construction. 2018 was a busy year for Joanne Hain Architect with many exciting projects getting off the ground. It was especially interesting to work with some alternative building technologies and explore their potential for decreasing building costs in our area.

I am so grateful for all the support I received from the valley community and I am looking forward to working with you in 2019.
