🌊🏖️ FESTIVE SEASON BEACH SAFETY – ENJOY THE OCEAN, STAY SAFE 🏖️🌊
12 December 2025
The festive season brings crowded beaches, warm weather and endless summer fun along our coastline. While enjoying the ocean, safety must always come first — conditions can change quickly, even on calm days.
Please keep these important beach safety tips in mind:
🚩 Swim only where lifeguards are on duty
Always obey beach safety flags and signage. Red flags mean swimming is not allowed.
🌊 Be aware of rip currents
Rip currents are strong, narrow currents that pull away from shore. If caught in one, stay calm, float to conserve energy, and swim parallel to the beach until free.
👶 Supervise children closely
Children should always be within arm’s reach near water. Never assume someone else is watching.
🌞 Protect yourself from the sun
Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, stay hydrated, and take regular breaks in the shade.
🍺 Avoid alcohol before swimming
Alcohol impairs judgement and reaction time and significantly increases the risk of drowning.
🏄 Watch for surfers and watercraft
Keep clear of surf zones and areas used by boats or jet skis.
🎀🛟 PINK BUOYANCY DEVICES AT BEACHES
Bright pink buoyancy devices placed at some beaches are public rescue flotation aids for water emergencies. They are designed to be thrown or taken into the water to help keep a person afloat until lifeguards or the NSRI arrive. Anyone may use them in an emergency. Do not remove or misuse this equipment — it can save a life.
