3rd Year Semester 2 Major Project | WeWork and WeLive where WeThrive

Concept:

I am incredibly proud to share snippets of my latest portfolio project for my third and final year of my Undergraduate degree in a BSc Interior Architecture.

The project was to create a corporate and residential space for the client of WeWork and WeLive (as well as through my own inspiration to deem it as a place where We Thrive). My archetype in particular was to design for the social students, and the design was to be implemented onto the adapted site (following a group site and courtyard intervention project) of South on Duncan in Hatfield, Pretoria.

My concept was to re-establish the identity of South on Duncan as proudly Pretorian (following regionalist characteristics and principles) while allowing it to act as a backdrop against which the student identity and culture shines through. This concept manifested itself mainly in how the traditional, neutral colours and older materials and textures cohesively merge with and are celebrated alongside the newer technologies, smoother and softer textures, and bright, colourful and patterned aspects of the hustle and bustle of student culuture and activities. The concept also focused on scales of socialization and degrees of transparency - noting and emphasizing the journey and rituals associated with crossing thresholds between public and social, and private and intimate spaces. However, the concept was also considered and carried through in aspects of sustainability, construction methods, and focusing on inhabitant subjective well-being.

Semester 1 Major Project | Estuary (Retail design)

Concept🌍💦🌊:

Estuary is an upcycling centre and retail space situated in 012 Central, Pretoria. Estuary offers consumers the opportunity to admire and learn about or to directly engage in the upcycling process by contributing up-cyclables or creating customized products under the guidance of trained makers.
Estuary aims to provide clientele with products that are not only environmentally conscious and active, but that also give back to the surrounding community.

Estuary, defined as the point where a stream or river meets the sea, and fresh and saltwater meet; marks itself as the bridging point for the gap between humanity and the environment. The brand is actively involved in upcycling, community and ocean clean-up initiatives, environmental awareness campaigns, and creating job and community opportunities wherever possible.

Estuary is born from the design and creation of my luminaire which uses upcycled plastic bottles melted in an oven to give the PET rings their organic and warped shape. The luminaire is constructed by connecting the rings with wire and expresses the narrative of the beauty of water and glittering reflectivity of light, disrupted by the harsh reality of man-made materials that threaten the environment and planet we inhabit. Estuary aims to break the linear line of damage that plastics create by interjecting with an upcycling program to produce aesthetic and environmentally conscious luminaires.💡

This was a challenging project but I am proud of the outcome. I can only refine and improve from here! Onwards and upwards.

I had an incredible opportunity yesterday to tour and document the amazing The Mountain Homes by architect Charl de Villiers. I took the tour alongside .interiorist and ⛰

We were treated to meringues and coffee before being truly spoilt on a guided tour through the entire premises featuring incredible views, informative discourse and surrounded by inspiring people and spaces!✨ This is not an afternoon that I will soon forget!

I think my favorite part was definitely learning and watching how this space truly demonstrates a user-centered approach and shows a home that comes alive through its beauty and through the engagement with its inhabitants! And who could forget about the materials and architectural styles that this building celebrates so honestly and beautifully!

There were just so many hidden treasures that I couldn’t possibly document them all in one afternoon but I definitely tried!🙌🏽
