SELF-CARE TIPS (Part 2 of 3)

If we are going to look after ourselves, we need to ensure that we are healthy. A healthy body is better able to cope with stress. Exercising does not have to be strenuous. You can walk the dog a few times a week, go on a hike, join a yoga or pilates class, go for a brisk walk……there are so many ways to get moving. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which make you feel good.

Healthy eating is also important. Make a list of what you eat on a weekly basis and see where you can make improvements. What can you cut down on, what do you need to eat or drink more of, and keep a log of this for a few weeks until it becomes the norm.

Our physical health and our mental health are intertwined. The way you feel influences the way you think.

SELF-CARE TIPS (Part 1 of 3)

Self-care means taking care of yourself so that we remain healthy -physically, mentally and spiritually. If we don’t take care of ourselves, we cannot take care of others in the best way. In our busy lives, we often don’t focus on self-care and this can result in physical and emotional burn-out.

One of the most important tips in the quest for self-care is to say “no”. We often feel guilty to say “no” (politely). There is often too much to do in too short a time, but we need to learn to be kind to ourselves by eliminating some of the factors that cause us stress. And remember that saying “no” is a complete sentence. You don’t have to justify or explain.

LET'S TALK ABOUT COMFORT ZONES (FINAL PART):
How do we get out of our comfort zones? Here are a few simple tips on how you can do this.

1. Do something physical that you haven’t done before, even if that is just going for a walk a few times a week.
2. Volunteer for a community project, where you will meet new people and contribute to something important.
3. Learn something new – this could be enrolling in an academic course, learning to play a musical instrument or learning a craft.
4. Change your daily routine in some way.
5. Change something about yourself – opt for a new hairstyle, wear an item of clothing that you would normally not wear, etc.

Believe in yourself and step out of that comfort zone!
