I was recently asked' why do I need approved building plans?' Simple answer, Insurance and fire.
Have a look at the wording in your policy. Most say they will replace the cost of your property to its former condition, it also stated that your property should should be built in accordance to the national building regulations. These regulations state that building plans and occupation certificates are a legal requirement. So don't get caught short. 38% of insurance claims are for fires. Many only small with minor damage.
