Six years ago today, I harvested these Black Beauty eggplants ( do you say aubergines, eggplants, or brinjals?) from the Santa Paloma / PRISA market garden. My friends the sunflowers looked on contentedly…

I did a year long internship at the Permaculture Research Institute of Southern Africa, and it was one of the most impactful, enriching, and beautiful years of my life.

Today I fell in love 💕

Can anybody tell me what this gorgeous beastie is? The pot at the nursery didn’t have a label.

I’m utterly, utterly enchanted 🌸

(PS: yes, it’s been a long while. Greetings)

We want to get back to being The Off-Grid Pear!

No, this isn’t another name-change announcement (although our current one doesn’t fit exactly right) - it’s about the way of living and the land.

In a few years (not too many) we’d like to move on from Hout Bay and build a house from the Earth somewhere away from the city, make gardens to eat, share and teach from, collect rainwater, experiment with systems, use alternative power sources - the whole shabang!

Our last few years of travel and attempts at the above have taught us many things: * to be clear about what we require.
* to be clear about what we can offer.
* to value ourselves and our skills enough that we allow ourselves to want what we want.
* what we cannot live with.
* and who we’d like to live with (archetype)
* that we need our own space and time, to be able to hibernate without explaining ourselves, to work with others at times and to work alone and uninterrupted at other times.
* that we NEED to help people grow food.

We are skilled individuals who work hard and are determined and resilient. We are permaculturists with a lot of background plant knowledge, we are skilled practically (building, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, cooking, remedies) and creatively (design, art, knotwork, out-of-the-box thinking.) We can live off of almost nothing. We don’t have much money but we’ve got alotta love! 😉

So here’s what we’d need:
* land (somewhere in Africa) with access to water
* the only ‘buy-in’ that would interest us would be to own land.
* no monthly payments unless they are finite.
* no micro-management; freedom to design, experiment and live in our space as we want (parameters are do-able)
* no-one scheduling our time, any exchange requirements would need to be left to us to do when we decide. (Deadlines are fine, of course)
* a pleasant and safe environment for our baby, dog and cats.
* Non-prejudiced, communicative, grounded, self-regulating humans to live near.

We’d love to find some land with friends, or slot in to a community or privately-owned property in exchange for a monthly amount of work, teaching and/or produce. We’d love to create a lived-on teaching space/demonstration site from which to offer courses with free spots for underprivileged individuals, to eat from and to share from.

Please send us any ideas, proposals or links relating to the above. Please share this. 💚

This is us sending our dreams into the mycelial network to find the right trees. 🍄

We are, of course, saving up what we can, when we can... and now we are manifesting too.

Learning to take guidance from the weather in how to spend one's days is an interesting shift to make. Here in Gauteng we have been experiencing the tail end of cyclone Eloise in Mozambique and the days have been chilly and cloudy, with lashing showers to remind us of who is in charge.
I personally love the rain, and find endless cups of dark coffee and books to be far more inviting than the demanding outside.

Dove back into the late and great Margaret Roberts' "100 New Herbs" to remind myself how boundless my area of study really is 🍂🍃

Hello, everyone, and HAPPY 2021!

Yes, yes, I know it's late... but, in characteristic fashion for the human bean that is me, late is better than never.
My family and I joined the ranks of the Covid-19 infected over December, and we've all only just begun to resurface and re-enter society. It was a humbling experience, realizing that everyone is vulnerable, everyone is really in this together, and I can say that we are incredibly lucky to have had one another to seek solace and comfort in, as well as just being so close as a family, to help us through.
Now that I am healthy again and feeling strong, it's time to tackle this new year with everything I have!
We'll be running another course and some workshops in late February and early March in Johannesburg, so keep your eyes on the page. Lockdown regulations will be held in check, as this virus is just as serious as they're making it out to be (take my word for it).

After a brief hiatus, hello and happy Wednesday ❤️👋

Two days ago I was walking through the gardens, enjoying the Spring splashes of colour, when suddenly I caught sight of a little bee seemingly suspended with her face planted in the centre of the flower. Upon closer inspection, this wee predator materialized from the backdrop of white petals, its fangs embedded in the back of the bee's neck.

Nature at work. Glad I'm not an insect and I only really have to worry about human things.
