We got tasked with a beautiful brief recently - a memorial garden in remembrance of a client’s son, prepared just in time for her 60th Birthday.

We set up a lovely seating area next to a tranquil fountain, and chose a selection of indigenous plants that will flower with white blossoms throughout the year.

We can’t wait to send an update once it takes more shape.

Scroll for the before pics and how we used a big portion of unused grass.

This entrance bed was not part of our initial proposal, but might just have become our favourite part of the installation.

Transforming the garden that welcomes you into this home with upgraded paving, a beautiful custom designed trellis door by Bradley Mason to cover the refuse area and a combination of white flowering indigenous plants placed in a more open and structured layout. Please notice that we also fixed the water feature!

Ilex Mitis will provide a lovely tall canopy that is planned to be pruned into a a neat rectangle, backed by Plumbago Auriculata, with Mackaya Bella on the opposite wall. We chose Asystasia Gangetica as a delicate ground cover with white flower to match.

Can’t wait for this to take on its structured topiary shape.

Can’t wait to see this “office garden sanctuary” grow up. We replaced the very low shrub line with a great structural indigenous selection and opened up the access to the garden from the door which was previously obstructed by plants. We matched the paving to the rest of the paving and gave the bed a neat edging, finished off with wood chips.

The Freylinia Tropica will grow into a nice hedge along the walls, Buddleja Auriculata into round shrub features while the Diospyros Whyteana provide height - great tree specimen for topiary in a small garden.

All plants have white flowers at different times of the year and will attract butterflies and a variety of birds to this corner.

Landscaping where there is no garden - this installation will become a beautiful feature wall. Bauhinia Bowkeri and Gardenia Volkensii will grow up the trellis installation to create beautiful evergreen greenery with decorative white flowers.

Swipe to see the before pic. These pots were repurposed in a more suitable area of the garden and we demolished the unused pool box/braai structure to open up the area and replaced with matching tiles.

A little “bedroom view” nook that we transformed with some tall planters and pebbles. Swipe to see the before pic. We chose white flowering Freylinia Tropica for the pots - a great evergreen indigenous shrub that lends itself well to topiary so that the planters can be pruned neatly once they have started to grow.

Flowering profusely in winter but also throughout the year, the plants will attract butterflies to this corner nook.

What have you planted in your garden to celebrate Arbor week this week? This is a baby indigenous Erythrina lysistemon that we grew from seed last year, ready to planted out into our garden now. It will grow into a lovely, small to medium-sized, deciduous tree with a spreading crown and brilliant red flowers.

As a source of building material, food, medicine, scenic beauty and positive environmental impact trees play a vital role in the health and well-being of our communities. A little potted succulent nook - transforming an unused brick stairway at our current installation that the kitchen overlooks into a beautiful array of colour and texture.

Check out the before pic - we refurbished the pots from the old mismatched pots around the property with a lick of paint and an awesome indigenous succulent selection.

Another progress pic from our current installation - the unused grass bank behind the pool transformed into a bed that will fill up with beautiful bright colours and flowers and attract wildlife to the garden in what we have nicknamed the “Sunbird Wall”.

It might look sparse now but watch this space as the Vepris Lanceolata, Tecomaria Capensis and Freylinia Tropica grow and completely hide the back wall of this garden.
