The Lily Borer caterpillar is a dreaded insect that attack especially Clivia, Agapanthus and Amaryllis plants.
Lily Borer moths lay a cluster of eggs on the leaves of the plant and the eggs hatch during the warmer months. This caterpillar bores through the leaves of the plant and if not treated quickly enough can destroy the whole plant right down to the bulb.

To combat them, use Cyper.
Mix as directed with water and water the whole plant until thoroughly wet.

Coffea racemosa is a coffee species endemic to Southern Africa and other than its caffeine-free beans, it can make a lovely shrub for the garden. It shows off with sprays of pink flowers on a background of dark leaves and can be quite striking in the garden. Read all about this interesting plant in the Autumn/Winter issue of Grow To Eat!

There are many edible plants that are not well known - but are still ideal for production, especially for smallholders.

One such example is the water chestnut, better known in the East, although it also grows wild in the eastern parts of South Africa. Water chestnuts are productive, easy to grow, extremely tasty and healthy. And they flourish even in limited space.

Manie van der Schyff botanical garden curator Jason Sampson shares his tips with BotSoc readers on why and how to cultivate water chestnut, and how to enjoy the tubers once you've harvested them: www.botanicalsociety.org.za/grow-water-chestnuts/
