We have just returned from a 2000 km expedition where we explore the largest fresh water lake system in South Africa.

This is home to the Tsonga people who for hundreds of years have lived sustainably off the overflow of a pristine ecosystem. Their lifestyle is one of intelligent integration into the indigenous food systems of estuaries in one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. We journey from Itala Game Reserve in northern Kwazulu Natal to the Mozambique border and base ourselves at the Kosi bay river mouth.

Our Director of Sustainability is offering EDGE Expert training this month.

This training will make you eligible to be able to write the EDGE online exam to achieve EDGE Expert professional accreditation.

End the year achieving one of the most recognised green building accreditations in world.

What is EDGE?

The EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) green building rating is an entry level certification system for resource-efficient buildings developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). To achieve EDGE certification, a building must demonstrate a minimum 20% improvement in energy, water, and embodied energy in materials compared to a comparable baseline building. It is used for various building types and helps owners and developers lower operating costs, reduce carbon emissions, and increase the value of their property.

Excited to share an invitation to the free, public exhibition of the student work from our founder's Master's unit at the Graduate School of Architecture, University of Johannesburg.

Some radical ideas of how to ecologically regenerate the threatened Glen Austin Bullfrog Wetland in Midrand, Johannesburg are proposed. From a hippo wildlife corridor, preventing the spread of malaria to alternative burial techniques, these projects propose alternative conservation methods to degraded greenfield sites found in the City of Johannesburg.

Exhibition summary:

"The University of Johannesburg's Graduate School of Architecture and Marc Sherratt Sustainability Architects invite you to a public exhibition of Unit 5 – Interspecies Design’s student work.

Located at the unit’s 2025 site, the Glen Austin Bullfrog Pan, the exhibition showcases alternative spatial strategies for engaging with wetlands in the city of Johannesburg. These architectural projects explore radical responses to climate change, illegal dumping, land invasion and erosion from overgrazing, while also addressing the restoration of the pan's threatened landscapes, the support of Giant Bullfrog breeding, and the regulation of the pan’s water levels.

Importantly, the work highlights how the ecological regeneration of the pan can serve as a cultural asset that bridges the communities of Glen Austin and Tembisa."

Spring is on its way!

To celebrate the change of season we have a new range of our popular Threatened Landscape Seed Mixes.

We now have pioneer seed mixes for all the threatened landscapes of Gauteng, including climax seed mixes that focus on pollinator, flower, and sensory (smell & taste) species that attract back local biodiversity.

Highveld grasslands, the dominant biome of Gauteng, are the second most diverse biome in South Africa after Fynbos at an incredible 82 plant species per 1000 sqm.

We have partnered with the South African National Biodiversity Institute to develop simple maps that show the historic vegetation types of South Africa's major cities and their threat levels.
Happy to share these maps with interested people, please contact MSSA by email.

You can use these maps to find out what vegetation type your property is found in so you choose the right seed mix to plant to begin your journey.

Focus your plant selections on what is locally indigenous to your specific area to see how insect and birdlife returns to even small areas of your garden.

Price - Pioneer Seed Mix - R 690 incl. VAT excl. delivery.
This amount of seed will regenerate approx. 250 sqm of land.
Please contact us by email at [email protected] to place an order.

Egoli Granite Grassland is the most endangered natural landscape in Gauteng, currently listed as Critically Endangered, one step away from extinct in the wild.

We are so passionate about preventing our wildlife from going extinct, are we as passionate about preventing the landscapes they live on from going the same route?

Let's take conservation from defensive to offensive and start where all activism should, at home.
