SIX really good reasons to get a System installed:

1. The first and most obvious reason to install a CCTV system is to allow you to monitor the perimeter of your property from the safety of your home and/or remotely from your mobile device.
2. A well-installed CCTV system is also a visual crime deterrent to would-be criminals. Be sure that your cameras are positioned to get a good vantage point and are clearly visible from outside your property to deter burglars.
3. Good quality cameras can help identify criminals and the cars used in crimes in your neighbourhood. This assists armed response companies and the police to apprehend criminals, preventing future break-ins.
4. A well-installed CCTV system requires little-to-no maintenance. Once installed, you can rely on it to protect and monitor your home.
5. Because it makes your home more secure, a CCTV system will reduce the likelihood of an insurance claim. Most insurance companies will reduce the cost of your policy (saving you money in the long term) if you have a functioning CCTV system.
6. RAS Systems is offering a FULL 10% discount on all CCTV Systems for August and September 2024. (This discount includes ALL equipment and labour.)

It is better to keep your dog(s) inside your house than outside. This is true mostly for protective reasons, but also for behavioural reasons - less barking, destructiveness and digging - says animal behaviourist, Karen Gray-Kilfoil.

Your dog is better able to alert you to unusual noises or intruders if he is inside. Outside dogs are vulnerable at night to possible intruders, and at risk to poison, being shot, stabbed, strangled, tied up or trapped in a yard or kennel.

We need to protect our dogs as much as they protect us. Access to as many people as possible is important if you want a well-balanced and protective dog, so it is important for puppies to come inside, meet visitors and go to puppy classes (from 8 weeks of age) where they can be introduced to people and children. This gives them a good understanding of friendly human behaviour, making them more likely to detect suspicious behaviour later on.

Opportunistic crimes are on the rise. These include theft by ‘wall hoppers’ as well as more organized break-ins. Make your property less of a target:

—> ensure valuable items like bicycles are kept secured in garages/sheds/store rooms.

—> keep your beams armed at night & make sure your electric fence is always on and the strands cannot be pushed apart to climb through it.

—> always call your security provider to investigate anything out of the ordinary. Then post on your WhatsApp street security group to alert your neighbours.

—> exercise extreme caution when entering/exiting your property.

—> test your alarm system & panic buttons regularly. Consider the effect of Loadshedding on your security systems and make sure you have adequate back up power supplies.

Your safety and security is about being aware of your behaviour and surroundings and ensuring that your security systems are in good working condition.

Everything you need to know about and how it affects your : (1-min read)

- Loadshedding has a direct impact on your alarm system.
- During loadshedding, your back-up battery is the only power source for your sensors, alarm panels, and all your other security products.
- Because the armed-response radio requires a strong battery to send signals to the control room, it also draws a lot of power.
- The battery, with every loadshed, becomes weaker.

—> Are you getting false alarms?
—> Are you receiving low battery notifications from your armed response company?
—> Does your alarm system ‘die’ before the power returns?
--> Is your gate motor failing?

This means you need to check your battery back-up.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and feel you need help, please call RAS Systems for professional advice.

Criminals are aware of the side effects of Loadshedding. Having the correct back-up battery is not a big investment but is a sensible way to help you keep your home safe during this time.

Lightning does not have to hit a home directly to affect the things inside it. If there’s something around the house that can conduct electricity, such as copper pipes or wires, there will be a pathway for the lightning to enter the house. There are 4 ways lightning can strike:

1. a direct strike (not common)
2. a side flash - this happens when lightning strikes a taller object and then “jumps” to another object
3. a ground current - when the energy from the lightning strike travels along the surface of the ground
4. conduction is when electricity travels through wires or metal surfaces. This is the greatest risk to home security systems.

Regardless of how the electric current enters your home, wired home security systems are especially vulnerable because they are connected by metal wiring. Anything that’s connected by these wires can be damaged from a lightning strike because of how metal conducts electricity. If unprotected, the high-voltage power from a lightning strike can overload the equipment and permanently damage or destroy it.

How can you improve the protection of your alarm system against by lightning:

1. effective grounding, and
2. surge protection.

Grounding is a safety mechanism that connects electrical circuits to the earth. This protects the system from overloading by triggering a fuse or circuit breaker. Most homes are grounded with structural steel beams and a metal rod connected to the home’s electrical panel.

To protect outdoor alarm sensors and security cameras from lightning strikes, avoid mounting them on metal. If these have to be mounted on metal, be sure to use a proper grounding system or a small copper strap.

Inside the home, surge protection is another way to prevent a lightning strike from destroying your security system and other vulnerable devices. Most alarm device manufacturers are aware of the threat lightning poses to their systems, and typically build protection methods into the units. Most alarm equipment will have surge protection built-in, typically on the motherboard. This surge protection is limited, however.

If your CCTV, beams, and/or alarm system are struck by lightning you will know straight away as it will no longer be functional. The good news is that you can claim from the insurance on your property’s bond. If your alarm system has been installed after this insurance was finalised, it is wise to contact your insurers to make them aware of your new alarm system.

Get your alarm system repaired as quickly as possible as criminals are quick to take advantage after electrical storms.
