Scholes Rayne Schaerer (S.R.S) Architects is a recently formed partnership that has grown out of the established practice of Michael Scholes and Associate Architects. For a small firm we have a range of ages, identities and backgrounds. We have architectural experience ranging from work at commercial complexes such as the Woodlands office park, residences across South Africa, to space planning and
the design of small follies. We keep up to date with current trends in architecture, design and urban design theory. Mike Rayne and Mark Schaerer completed their thesis together and have more than 10 years of experience. This ranges from work in France and Scotland to experience across leisure, commercial, educational, residential and government sectors. Together with Prof Kotze of Wits they managed the 2 New Universities Competitions in 2013. Mike is actively involved in education at Wits University where he lectures the subject of the Theory and Practice of Construction and has a very keen interest in design, the craft of building buildings and contracts. Mark is chair of the Brixton Community Forum and works with the City of Johannesburg as a Ward Committee member. Our philosophy is a simple one. It is our belief that architecture should answer the inner needs of the user, both functional and symbolic. We believe that buildings that are rooted in their context, be it urban or rural, that respond to climate, and have technological integrity will transcend the ordinary and hence the ideologies which often drive them. SRS Architects has covered a large range of buildings and projects. It is our belief that the briefing process is key to the design of differing scales of architecture. An understanding of site, context, people, use and human relationships enable us to create buildings that respond to people and in turn create interesting and unique buildings. Our firm is a design firm that prides itself on the detail drawings we produce, the constructability of the buildings we design and the relationship we form with our clients, consultants and those who build the buildings.
