Natural light, considered ventilation, calming material palettes, and intuitive movement through space all contribute to environments that support comfort, wellness, and a sense of ease.

The architectural intervention prioritised the improvement of the existing school infrastructure through strategic upgrades and rehabilitation works, while remaining sensitive to the operational needs of the school and the socio-economic realities of the surrounding community.

Particular emphasis is placed on learner safety, durability of materials, ease of maintenance, visibility and passive surveillance, and the creation of welcoming educational spaces that promote positive social engagement.

Good design goes beyond function. It considers the well-being of the people who will experience a space every day, creating environments that not only perform well but also feel good to be in.

This is what was heavily considered when designing the David Livingstone School building.

Long before construction begins, architecture starts with conversation.

Every project is shaped through a process of collaboration, ideas explored, challenges unpacked, and decisions refined through collective thinking. Around plans, sketches, and discussions, architecture begins to take shape through the shared expertise of many perspectives.

At SVA, we believe the strongest outcomes are achieved through collaboration. Design is never the work of one voice alone, but the result of critical thinking, meaningful dialogue, and a team working together toward a common vision.

The future of our built environment depends on the decisions we make today.

Architecture has the power to do more than shape skylines - it can help shape a more sustainable future. Through environmentally responsive design, thoughtful materiality, and spaces that work in harmony with their surroundings, architecture becomes a meaningful contributor to long-term resilience.

At SVA, sustainability is considered not as an afterthought, but as an integral part of the design process. From creating buildings that respond intelligently to climate and context to designing spaces that support the evolving needs of communities, we believe responsible architecture should consider both present impact and future generations.

Designing for tomorrow begins with how we build today.

Behind every project is a perspective. A way of thinking. A commitment to design with intention.

As part of our ongoing team spotlight series, we’re introducing the people who help shape the thinking and the work environment behind SVA, the architects, associates, and leaders whose experience, insight, and approach contribute to the spaces we create.

Ilse Danev brings a unique perspective to the practice but shares a common belief in architecture that is thoughtful, purposeful, and people-centred.

She holds a Master's in Architecture from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and has more than 12 years of architectural and project lead experience covering a variety of fields from high-end residential to large-scale government projects in Gqeberha and the greater Eastern Cape region.

The most meaningful architecture is often felt before it is noticed.

It exists in the quiet moments of everyday life. In the ease of movement through a space, the comfort of natural light, the feeling of connection within shared environments, or the sense of belonging that a thoughtfully designed place can create.

Architecture influences how we live, learn, work, and interact, often in ways that go unseen. We believe the true value of design lies not only in what a building looks like, but in how people experience it every day.

Because creating spaces that matter means designing with people at the centre of every decision.

What begins as a sketch rarely ends the same way.

At SVA, the journey from concept to built form is an evolving process - shaped by testing ideas, responding to constraints, and refining architecture through problem-solving.

The evolution of 14 Dock Road at the V&A Waterfront reflects this approach.

Early concept sketches explored a heavier, more sculptural form, with deeply wrapped façades and expressive massing. As the project developed, the design adapted in response to the client brief, environmental conditions, urban context, and technical requirements - while retaining its core intent.

Investec’s vision called for a building that felt contemporary and distinctive, yet restrained; prioritising functionality, efficiency, and longevity over iconic form.

This led to a transformation in the architectural language. The final building became lighter, more transparent, and more refined, with expansive glazed façades designed to maximise views while carefully managing solar performance.

The atrium evolved into a civic-scale viewing window, connecting the building to the public realm, while the elevated ground floor responds to pedestrian movement through the precinct.

Every adjustment strengthened the outcome - from façade detailing and structural coordination to future-proofing views and accommodating complex site constraints.

At SVA, architecture is not about forcing an idea onto a site. It is about allowing the realities of place, purpose, and people to shape the final expression.

274 Kaleidoscope Development

The façade concept evolved into a dynamic interplay between fenestration patterns and the adjacent solid enclosure, creating depth, rhythm, and visual identity.

The result is a contemporary architectural expression that balances transparency and solidity - responding to function while shaping a distinctive urban presence.

At SVA, design goes beyond form - it is about creating spaces that work, belong, and endure.

We are proud to announce that ADOWA Living Ravenscraig House was awarded a Reside Platinum Award for Student Accommodation Residential Project 2026 at the Reside Awards Gala Dinner last night.

The Reside Awards recognise individuals and organisations making a meaningful impact on the lives of South Africans, celebrating projects that set a benchmark for quality, sustainability and community-driven development.

For SVA, this recognition speaks directly to the purpose behind the project: creating student accommodation that is not only functional and well-designed, but that supports how students live, connect, learn and thrive.

We are proud to continue to stand alongside ADOWA Property Developers in building the future. Congratulations to the entire project team.

From concept to construction, the Equate Head Office project reflects a considered approach to structure, materiality, and purpose.

The architectural language is informed by clarity in form and a disciplined structural expression, where each element contributes to both function and identity.

As the project progresses on site, the translation from framework to built environment reveals the intent behind every detail.

A project shaped not only by design, but by precision in ex*****on.
