Joburg residents are getting hit with yet another sneaky blow to their wallets. The City of Johannesburgโs Finance MMC Loyiso Masuku announced water tariffs would rise by an average of 12.5%, but buried in the fine print is a massive 65.6% jump in the fixed water demand management levy for households. This flat fee, which you pay every month just to stay connected regardless of how much water you use, is shooting up from around R65 to over R107 starting July. While the city claims itโs part of a bigger R97 billion budget, critics like WaterCAN and AfriForum point out the misleading numbers and question where the extra cash is really going, especially with ongoing service delivery struggles and infrastructure headaches in the city.
This kind of math trickery leaves ordinary people feeling frustrated and squeezed even tighter. The city says the overall increase is modest, but for families already battling high living costs, this fixed charge feels like a hidden tax that punishes paying customers without clear answers on fixing leaks, outages, or basic services. Some defend the need for more revenue to keep water systems running, while others demand real transparency and accountability instead of creative accounting.
