Winter is a time for clearing, cleaning and organising the nursery - with just a 'little' help from John and the strong men in his team! Starting with restoring the rows of 1000 litre trees they worked their way down to finally end at the much smaller 20 litre trees. Now everything is looking s***k and span and I'm sure the trees also feel as fresh and revived as they look.

Do you ever get mixed up between aloes and their cousins, kniphofias?

Many people do! Both have flowers of flaming shades of orange and red on top of long, leafless stalks at the same wintry time of year.

BUT, aloes have thick, fleshy leaves and grow in sandy soil whereas kniphofias love riverbank-type of soil - moist but with good drainage and their leaves are coarse and long, resembling strap-like grasses.

Step closer to the merry, yellow canary creeper. It is a tolerant, fast-growing garden plant that grows easiest in full sun, in well-drained composted garden soil against a wall or fence. Feed regularly but water sparingly as this plant is semi-succulent and can tolerate long periods of dryness. It also makes a superb groundcover if allowed to spread horizontally.

A not uncommon sight in autumn and winter: a bundle of procession worms are stripping a garden tree of its crown after emerging very hungrily from eggs that have been laid last year. This feeding frenzy can carry on for almost a week before the caterpillars either crawl from the tree or fall down, and look for another space to cocoon themselves in little bundles of earth painstakingly built. All we can say is, wear a hat when picnicking under an affected tree!

Have you had a similar experience?

What a crown is a canopy!
When scouting for the perfect tree for the right space, consider the shape of the tree canopy. Here are example of indigenous trees with rounded canopies, looking a little bit like the lollipop trees we all used to draw as children. They provide even shade, aesthetic balance, and practical benefits for gardens and urban spaces.

One of our uttyruspolia `Phyllis van Heerden' shrubs received a 5 star rating from this feathered customer! He tweeted: "I came for the company and I stayed for the nectar." The shrub is a fast growing, semi-deciduous plant with long lasting flowers. It draws pollinators to it like, well, bees to flowers!

Nothing says winter like the bright colours of aloes!
A healthy aloe has upward-facing leaves that are vibrant in green to blue-green colours and are plump and strong to the touch. The flower crown should reach upwards and if the plant is truly flourishing, you may spot pups sprouting at the base. Don't forget to check the roots - it should be firm and strong, not mushy or decayed.
