Botanically known as Disocactus anguliger, and previously Epiphyllum anguliger, this cactus is certainly not like other plants in the cactus family. Growing in shadier spots with high humidity, I find these plants are perfectly suited to indoor growth. It is a great air purifier.

Some growers also call it the orchid cactus, a name which makes a whole lot of sense when the plant is in bloom. The breathtaking 10 to 15cm wide flowers it occasionally produces are an orchid purple/pink to white, multi-petaled.

As a houseplant, the zig zag cactus is most often grown in a hanging basket or in a pot that’s elevated on a plant shelf or plant stand so the flat stems can trail down over the edge. However, if you want to train it to grow upwards, you can twine the long stems onto a trellis, moss pole, or some other vertical climbing structure.

The Canary Island date palm is a slow growing tree that can reach heights of 50 to 60 feet. The trunk can reach a diameter of four feet and is covered with an attractive, diamond-shaped pattern from old leaf scars. It is topped with a crown of eight to fifteen-foot-long, stiff leaves. The leaves have extremely sharp spines at their bases and are deep green in color. The stems are yellow in color. The stalks of inconspicuous flowers are replaced with clusters of one inch diameter, orange-yellow, ornamental fruits which ripen in early summer. The dates are oblong and about one and a half inches in length. They consist of a large pointed seed surrounded by sweet sugary flesh. Dates are formed from flowers on four foot inflorescences that emerge from among the leaves in spring, or early summer.
The Canary Island date palm is native to the Canary Islands, located along the coast of northeast Africa. In the mid- to late nineteenth century, the Canary Island date palm became one of the most widely cultivated ornamental palms in the world. In Southern Europe it became a symbol of wealth, privilege and sunny holidays, especially along the Côte d’Azur in France.
Canary Island date palm trees have been utilized as a theme generating focal point in landscapes worldwide for decades. The Palms are used generally along parks and streets. The Canary Island date palm has value as a container plant, or outstanding by itself in a landscape.
This is a very hardy plant with low water usage.

This compost is highly recommended for use in edible gardens, herb and vegetable gardens, dressing old and newly planted flower and plant beds. The best time to compost is during Spring and again during March and April.

Compost improves the soil structure and should be automatically incorporated into all new planting as well as maintaining existing garden beds.

This compost is enriched with kraal manure that will enrich the soil with nutrients and organic matter which enhances soil structure, water retention, and the growth of beneficial microorganisms. These amendments provide a slow-release source of essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for plants, improve soil texture by increasing drainage in clay soils and moisture retention in sandy soils, and promote overall healthier more robust plant growth.

Night Blooming Cereus, Queen of the Night, Orchid Cactus, Epiphyllum
Amazingly fragrant, big white or red flowers open in the evening and last until the early morning hours. The flowers bloom in summer on this interesting epiphytic tropical cactus. May be at their best when grown in hanging baskets where the flat arching stems and hanging flowers are held at eye and nose level.

Epiphyllums are one of the few true jungle Cacti where they are often found growing with the orchids and bromeliads far removed from the forest floor. The flowers are only open for a short time at night and are typically pollinated by bats and large moths. If pollinated the flowers can mature into deliciously edible fruit.

It is a true delight to see them bloom! They are very easy to care for and a beautiful addition to any garden.

Hoya vines are absolutely stunning indoor plants or can be planted in your garden. These unique plants are native to southern India and named after Thomas Hoy, the Duke of Northumberland’s gardener and the grower that brought attention to the Hoya.
The Hoya climbing vine is easy to care for in most home situations provided they get plenty of indirect light and high humidity. These are long-lived plants that prefer cramped growing conditions.

With a little attention and knowledge on how to care for Hoya, these plants can be passed down from generation to generation.
Hoyas are grown in a free draining mix and like to dry out between watering.

Medium to bright indirect light suits most Hoyas.
People grow hoyas for different reasons. Some grow hoyas as indoor plants for their lovely cascading habit and lush leaves. Some collectors grow hoyas for the different leaf shapes and patterns, while others look for certain traits in the flowers. Whatever your reason for growing hoyas, they are truly rewarding plants that in many cases prosper even with very little care and attention.

For beginners, the easiest of the Hoya species to grow would be Hoya Carnosa and Hoya Pubicaly x

Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus) with variety names such as ‘Scarlet Jewel’ and ‘Golden Jewel’ is an absolute treasure in your edible garden.

Nasturtium Flowers are often only touted for their beauty in colour and smell, but nasturtiums bring so much more to the table – specifically your dinner table.

Culinary uses:
The entire nasturtium plant is edible, so it includes the flowers, leaves, stems, buds and seeds.

Some people pickle the fresh green seeds; or they can be dried and powdered, to use as a musterdy spice. Be warned they can be a bit hot when eaten fresh of the plant.

You can use leaves and seeds fresh or cooked. Flowers are best used fresh, if you want them to look pretty; but you can also add them to smoothies or other recipes, cooked or fresh.

Nutritional information:

Here is an overview of the potential micronutrients available in one cup of nasturtium flowers:

Micro elements:

zinc: 73-100% RDA
iron: 3.9 – 4.6% RDA
phosphorous: 7% RDA
potassium: 2.5% RDA
calcium: 3% RDA
magnesium: 4% RDA
copper: 1.2 – 5.2% RDA
Vitamin C (100 – 200% RDA)

Medicinal qualities:

Some of the medicinal qualities attributed to the nasturtium are:

Antibacterial
Antifungal
Antioxidant
Digestive system help
Respiratory system help
Circulatory system help
Minor cuts and scrapes
Skin healing properties
Hair growth

Nasturtium’s ability to help with clearing up skin problems and stimulating hair growth is a great health benefit.

In the garden:

Growing nasturtiums can benefit the other plants in your garden.

Nasturtiums can mask the presence of other plants that pest insects want to eat.
Another way nasturtiums can protect your crops from voracious pests is by their smell. The leaves give off a peppery scent that some insects don’t like; and which can cover the scent of your crop plants. Mixed with the sweet scent of the flowers, these scents appear to have a protective effect.

They make a great ground cover. They help the micronutrients by putting out a ton of organic material. They can grow almost anywhere and are drought tolerant and will often grow in poor soil conditions. A wide variety of pollinators and beneficial insects are drawn to the Nasturtium.
