APPLICATION OF REACTAMINE ET (PURE POLYUREA) ONTO HIGH DENSITY FOAM SHIP BUMPERS
In March 2015 David Prinsloo attended a 3 day International Polyurea Course at the Qingdao Technological University in China – winning the course prize.
Upon returning to South Africa with the view of purchasing a machine, he started to research Polyurea application machinery in earnest and eventually settled on the GRACO Reactor E10 machine complete with hoses and the AW2222 air fusion gun.
Once word got out David and his 36 year old business, Prize Roofing, who had always prided themselves at being the best at problem solving in their chosen fields of expertise, waterproofing, roofing and painting had now started to apply Polyurea, he was soon approached and accepted the challenge of spraying 68 x 2m x 1,25 girth, boat fenders for 4 x 17m long custom Vee-Craft designed and built aluminium passenger ferry’s for a client in Mozambique One of the challenges was that the coating had to be a specific blue colour, which is tricky with traditional Polyurea coatings as they are not colourfast / UV stable and tend to ‘yellow’ quickly when exposed to the sun. The colourfast version of Polyurea is extremely expensive and would not have been economically viable.
The other challenge was that the product had to be extremely rugged, impact and abrasion resistant as the ferry’s would be bumping into jetties and the hulls of ships at anchor Stoncor recommended coating the pontoon type boat fenders with a 2mm thick blue tinted Reactamine ET Polyurea coating which is a 100% solids, Zero Volatile Organic Content, elastomeric, aromatic Polyurea with exceptional abrasion and impact resistance and extremely fast cure times, followed by a high quality Aliphatic Polyurethane coating to provide an exact colour as per the clients requirements that would also provide UV stability and superior gloss retention The application of this high end product requires a specialized team and equipment and the dedication and attention to detail of the Prize Roofing Polyurea team consisting of Bruce, Lance, Davey and David ensured that the client received a quality product within a short period of time that would outlast the previous system many times over.
In the words of Stoncor Africa “Prize Roofing under the leadership of Mr David Prinsloo has become Stoncor Africa’s go-to guy in Cape Town when it comes to specialized technical coating applications in a variety of service conditions – be it waterproofing, corrosion protection, asset protection and more”. So far the Product has exceeded the Clients expectations and proven itself in extreme weather and docking/ mooring conditions.
