🌿 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗮𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 🌿

Found in the Winterberg mountain range of the Eastern Cape, Encephalartos cycadifolius occurs naturally in open grassland around the Bedford and Cradock districts.

🚨 Conservation Status: Endangered

Cultivation
☀️ Prefers full sun.
💧 Does well with regular watering, provided the soil has excellent drainage.
❄️ Frost tolerant.

Propagation
🌱 Can be propagated from both suckers and seed, although this species is slow growing.

Its natural habitat and slow growth make E. cycadifolius a fascinating species for cycad enthusiasts and collectors to learn about and appreciate.

🌿 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗮𝗱?

South Africa is home to an incredible variety of Encephalartos species. While they may sometimes be mistaken for palms or tree ferns, cycads have several distinctive features.

🌱 1. The Trunk
Most cycads have a thick, cylindrical trunk with distinctive leaf scars forming patterns along the stem.

🌿 2. The Leaves
Leaves grow in a crown from the trunk, with leaflets displaying parallel veins and colours ranging from green to blue-grey.

🌰 3. The Cones
Cycads don't produce flowers. Instead, they reproduce through separate male and female cones.

Learning these features is a great first step towards recognising and appreciating the diversity of South Africa's cycads.

Spring has arrived in South Africa and your cycads are ready to wake up from their winter rest. September is the perfect time to give them the care they need for a healthy growing season.

Here's your September checklist:

💧 Restart regular watering as temperatures begin to rise, but allow the soil to dry between waterings.
🌱 Feed for spring growth with a slow release fertiliser or organic bone meal to encourage strong roots and healthy new leaves.
✂️ Remove old winter fronds by trimming away dead or frost damaged leaves with clean, sharp tools.
🐞 Check for pests early by inspecting new growth for scale, mealybugs and aphids before they become a problem.
🪴 Refresh drainage by making sure pots and planting areas drain freely to protect roots from rot.

Have you ever noticed the impressive cones produced by cycads? 🌱

Unlike many flowering plants, cycads do not produce flowers or fruit. Instead, they reproduce using cones.

🌿 Male cycads produce pollen cones that release pollen.
🌱 Female cycads produce seed cones where the seeds develop.
🔎 The male and female cones can look very different depending on the species.

Meet Encephalartos cerinus, a rare and critically endangered South African cycad naturally found in the rocky landscapes of KwaZulu Natal.

📍 Natural Habitat:
KwaZulu Natal, particularly the Tugela Ferry District. It is often found growing in open, rocky areas and on cliffs.

⚠️ Conservation Status:
Critically Endangered

🌱 Cultivation:
💧 Does well with regular watering and good drainage but can survive periods of drought.
☀️ Grows well in semi shade to full sun.
❄️ Tolerates light frost.

🌿 Propagation:
E. cerinus grows relatively quickly and is easily propagated from seed. It rarely produces suckers.
