PROmix™ Cephalotus • Carnivorous Plant Soil Mix for Albany Pitcher Plants is on everyone’s watchlist this week 🔥
PROmix Cephalotus™ — Carnivorous Plant Soil for Albany Pitcher Plants
Cephalotus (Cephalotus follicularis) are highly sensitive to poor soil conditions. Too wet and the plant can suddenly collapse from root or crown rot. Too dry and growth slows or stalls. PROmix Cephalotus™ is formulated to strike that balance precisely — a fast-draining, moisture-stable blend developed specifically for Albany pitcher plants and refined through real growing experience in South African conditions.
Why PROmix Cephalotus™?
* Free-draining structure — prevents waterlogging and reduces the risk of root and crown rot
* Moisture-balanced — retains enough hydration for steady growth without staying soggy
* Supports sensitive root systems — ideal for slow-growing plants that dislike disturbance
* Completely nutrient-free — mimics the naturally poor soils Cephalotus evolved in
* Pre-mixed and ready to use — no measuring, no blending, no guesswork; just add water and plant
* Tried, tested and trusted in South Africa — developed through real growing conditions, not theory
* Exclusive to Cultivo Carnivores — available only through our online store
What's in It — and Why It Works
PROmix Cephalotus™ is made from carefully selected, high-quality ingredients chosen for consistency, purity and performance. Each batch is thoroughly washed to remove mineral residues before blending.
The result is a light, airy substrate that allows water to move through quickly while still holding enough moisture around the roots. This balance is critical for Cephalotus — keeping roots oxygenated while avoiding the stagnant conditions that often lead to rot.
No fillers. No unnecessary organic matter. No fertiliser. Just a clean, stable growing medium designed for one of the most sensitive carnivorous plant species.
How Much Do You Need?
Each 650ml resealable packet covers:
* 1 × 11cm planter (ideal size for most Cephalotus)
* 2 × 9cm pots
* 3 × 7.5cm pots
* 7 × 5cm pots
💡 Tip: Always moisten the mix before potting. Use rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water — never tap water.
Planting Without Root Disturbance
Cephalotus are known for disliking root disturbance. Many plants in our collection are grown in Cultivo’s Rootball Plugs™, allowing you to simply make a hole and place the plug directly into the soil.
This reduces transplant shock, keeps roots stable, and makes repotting far easier — especially for beginners or sensitive plants.
Watering and Drainage — What Matters Most
Cephalotus prefer moist soil, not constantly wet conditions. Light tray watering can be used, but the mix should not stay waterlogged. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings while keeping the root zone lightly moist.
Occasional top watering helps flush the soil and maintain freshness. Good drainage is critical — learn more in our Cephalotus drainage and watering guide.
When to Repot — and Why It Matters
Cephalotus should only be repotted when necessary, as they prefer minimal root disturbance. When repotting is required, using a fresh, free-draining mix helps restore airflow to the root zone and reduces the risk of rot.
PROmix Cephalotus™ provides a stable growing environment that supports long-term health without frequent intervention.
Other PROmix Blends
Each carnivorous plant species has its own specific soil requirements. Explore our full range of species-specific PROmix blends — formulated for Venus flytraps, sundews, butterworts and more.
The Right Soil Makes the Difference
PROmix Cephalotus™ removes one of the biggest risks in growing Albany pitcher plants — poor drainage. Whether you're growing your first plant or maintaining a collection, starting with the correct substrate gives your plant the stable foundation it needs to grow steadily and avoid sudden decline.
Developed for South African growers by specialists who grow carnivorous plants themselves.
Every Cultivo order includes a detailed, species-specific plant care guide, with practical guidance on soil, watering and seasonal care — everything you need to help your plant settle in and grow well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to mix anything with this soil?
No — PROmix Cephalotus™ is fully pre-mixed and ready to use. Just moisten the mix and plant directly. No measuring, no blending and no guesswork.
Why is drainage so important for Cephalotus?
Cephalotus are highly sensitive to stagnant, waterlogged soil. Poor drainage can quickly lead to root or crown rot. A free-draining mix allows oxygen to reach the roots while preventing excess moisture from building up.
What water should I use with this mix?
Use only rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water. Mineral-rich tap water can build up in the soil over time, reducing drainage efficiency and potentially damaging the plant’s sensitive root system.
How long will this soil last?
PROmix Cephalotus™ stays effective for 12–18 months or longer when used with low-mineral water. Unlike many carnivorous plants, Cephalotus prefer minimal root disturbance and do not need frequent repotting. Only repot when necessary — such as if the soil has compacted or drainage has noticeably reduced.
