Our plant of the week is Acorus Gramineus, Licorice Sweet Flag or Licorice Grass.
A hardy perennial with a strong licorice flavour when crushed. It is used in both Japanese and Thai cooking. The leaves can be used to flavour rice, grains and couscous for summer salads.
It likes a moist environment and grows in dappled shade or full sun. It does well on the edge of a pond, but can also grow in other areas, as long as it has constant moisture. It’s a low-growing grass, reaching up to 30cm high.
It has various uses: In a rock garden, as a border, in a natural garden, to edge a flower bed, as a potted plant or a ground cover.
