The addition of an architecturally designed landscape can have a deep impact on the "whole building design" process. Most favorably, a building is not an incursion of the landscape but an essential addition of it. It is inevitable that a building must rest in a space and that befor
e it can be entered, it must be approached. The where and how a building is situated on the land, sets the context for its evolving construction, development, and use. A well designed building, when developed within 'designing as a whole' principles, is properly integrated with its' surroundings, it serves as a good neighbor for the community where it rests, other structures and its natural setting; and should be accessible, secure, and aesthetically pleasing. Descape strives to generate space that integrates the user of the space into the surrounding environment, rather than to create a picturesque space that merely allows the user to become a viewer of the space. The user has to be able to interact as well as move through space in time to create different experiences. This is done by integrating aesthetical values, experiential values, functional values as well as environmentally sustainable values to design. In terms of planting, Descape aspires to create a self-sustaining natural planting community that enhances, yet functionally coexists with the integrated design. The vegetation should also enhance the habitat towards each other to create a symbiotic relationship within the planting community and the birds and insects that it lures, while functionally enhancing the integrity of the design itself. Due to the technical nature of space, the design should also attempt to resolve and answer the technical considerations and constraints that the site offers while utilizing and responding to the opportunity that it holds.
