Thatch over an exposed timber structure, stone piers carrying the load, and the fire at the centre where it has always belonged. The proportions are what make it feel new: a longer span, a lower eave, and steel resolving the structure quietly behind the joinery.

Traditional forms reward this kind of attention beautifully.

Water as part of the landscape.

A pool that meets the deck without breaking the line. Quieter moments of water elsewhere in the home. Held within the bushveld rather than imposed on it.

Designed for Mjejane Game Reserve by JK Design Architects.

Fluted timber on three sides, a backlit mirror set flush without visible fixings, and a basin cut from a single block of dark stone.

The smallest room in the house receives exactly the same care as the largest, which is why guests always remember it.

This home was drawn around rest.

The entrance opens onto a stair with open risers on a blackened steel stringer, so daylight carries straight underneath and the arrival feels light and generous. The formal lounge steps down as the ceiling lifts, a small move in section that does a great deal for the sense of calm. In the main suite, fluted oak runs floor to ceiling behind the bed and the wardrobe doors follow the same rhythm. The en-suite answers in white tile and black tapware, cool and clear against the warmth of the timber. The study lifts the tone again through its joinery.

Room by room, the whole palette was planned as one continuous idea.

The most-lived-in room in this house opens on three sides to the garden.

Kitchen, dining and lounge were all placed to face it, deliberately, from the very first sketch.

A linear fire the full length of the wall, a bar backed in smoked glass, and a ceiling of dark timber battens tuned to bring the volume down to a warm, intimate scale.

A room made purely for enjoyment, and considered just as carefully as every other one in the house.šŸ”„

Texture is everything here.

Rough stone, warm timber, and slim dark steel give this Silver Lakes Golf Estate home its character, grounding the contemporary forms in something tactile. A palette built to age beautifully.

Three materials, one idea. Glass to open the home to its setting, timber to warm it, stone to ground it. Brought together beneath a single roofline and finished to last a generation.

Residence Mfulwane holds two horizontal planes apart and lets the light run between them.

The street elevation is composed for discretion: a blade wall, a garage door in dark timber, a single slot of glazing marking where the stair climbs behind it. Past the threshold the house opens generously. A vertical timber screen filters the double-volume entrance, and from there the plan runs clean to the water. The kitchen sits behind a long island in honed stone, positioned so whoever is cooking still faces the garden. Beyond it the patio carries a bar, a fireplace and a ceiling that steps down to a warm, human scale before the pool.

Every one of those moves was settled at drawing stage. Restraint like this is the sum of many considered choices.
