INDIAN MYNA BIRDS CAUSING HAVOC IN BOTSWANA
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks has raised alarm over the rapid spread of Indian myna birds across Botswana, warning that the species poses a growing threat to local biodiversity.
In response, the department recently engaged Marketing Solutions Pty Ltd to explore strategies for managing and controlling the expanding population. The company delivered a presentation outlining practical and sustainable approaches to curb the spread of the invasive birds.
The session highlighted the urgent need for coordinated intervention, as Indian mynas continue to establish themselves in new areas. Originally detected in Botswana around 2007, the birds have since multiplied rapidly.
Experts note that Indian mynas are highly aggressive and territorial. They invade nesting spaces, displace indigenous bird species, and disrupt natural ecosystems by dominating habitats. Their presence often leads to a decline in native bird populations, as they outcompete them for food and shelter.
The Department emphasized that without effective control measures, the species could significantly undermine Botswana’s rich biodiversity, calling for increased awareness and collaborative action to address the challenge.
