DO I REALLY NEED AN ARCHITECT?

I understand why people ask the question, especially these days.
When most people think about design, they imagine: beautiful homes, expensive finishes, perfectly styled spaces. Not necessarily something "essential."

But the more projects I work on, the more I realize how little design is about how a home looks, and more about how it impacts the people living in it. A poorly designed home will always ‘hold you back’ and things will never ‘just feel right’.

Floor areas will get cluttered by furniture that compensates for poor planning.
Finishes become maintenance hazards instead of adding value. And over time, the home starts demanding more from you than it give. Your home will start owning you…

And here is the golden thread…. A well-designed home does the opposite.
It accommodates the people living in it — their routines, habits, aspirations, and the realities of everyday life. It does not ask for constant attention. It works quietly in the background.

Storage is where you need it. Maintenance is manageable. Spaces flow naturally from one to another. And most importantly, it gives people more time and energy to focus on their lives rather on their home. A well-designed home will uplift you and not drag you down.

So yes, hiring an architect is an absolute privilege, but I think it will also one of the best investments you will ever make. A happy home is a happy life…o”,)

METICULOUS PLANNING. We take great care to consider every project in plan and section & spend innumerable hours refining the layout and flow of every design. Unlike many other architects we believe that every design should be site specific and will only work for that particular site. Never will we ‘copy & paste’ or ‘tweak’ any of our previous designs to any other site for a new client. Many quick HAND SKETCHES helps me refine the aesthetical character of every project until it just feels right …and only then will we jump onto CAD.

Take a look at our CABINS for a Prestigious Game Lodge (Waterberg)… In one of our recent projects, we explored new & exciting construction methods, materials and the latest sustainable principles. As architects, now more than ever we should be conscious of the materials we specify and the impact these materials have on our environment. Low-carbon materials that can be locally sourced and manufactured is a step in the right direction.

A LONG THIN HOUSE...

The shape of a house has a big effect on the overall privacy of a home. I believe that the rooms of a small house can be strung out one after the other, in order for the distance between the rooms to be as far as possible. This way your home can be surprisingly narrow and still function perfect!

SUCK OUT THE MARROW OF LIFE… People always ask me why I love designing smaller structures in nature and not some big skyscraper for all to see. My answer is simple…do what you really love & what makes you feel alive.

I recently went on a hike to Centinel Peak in the Drakensberg, which reminded me once again to ‘live deep’ as in the words of Henry David Thoreau - “ I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.”

THE SOUND OF WATER (…New African Lodge Design).

Water has a powerful physiological effect on your body – so much so that even drinking a glass of water can calm your nerves. This is because water triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's 'rest and digest' response. In fact, the mere sight and sound of water can induce a flood of neurochemicals that promote wellness, increase blood flow to the brain and heart and induce relaxation.
