This private residence in Stellenbosch was designed around generous open-plan living, natural light and a strong connection to its Western Cape setting.

The architecture brings together a bold gabled roof form, plastered and painted walls, black steel detailing and warm timber accents. The result is a contemporary home with a calm, refined character that feels both modern and contextually grounded.

The attached drawings show the design process through the ground floor plan, elevations and 3D diagrams, while the renderings illustrate the exterior faรงade and the double-volume interior living space.

The open-plan dining, living room and kitchen form the heart of the home. This double-volume space is designed to feel expansive and welcoming, with large windows framing views of the landscape and allowing natural light to shape the interior throughout the day.

A home shaped around light, volume, view and everyday living.

A wine cellar should feel like more than a storage room. It should feel like part of the home.

For this residence in Stellenbosch, we designed a wine cellar as a space for both keeping and enjoying wine. The floor plan sets out the layout and flow of the room, while the render and animation bring the atmosphere of the space to life.

Warm timber, soft lighting, elegant material choices and a calm, intimate mood all come together to create a cellar that feels both practical and special.

It is a space designed for collecting, tasting and sharing.

This week we are sharing a closer look at the patio gable and balcony threshold details developed for the high density buildings at Birdhaven Retirement Estate in Midstream.

The gable detail brings together the key architectural elements of the faรงade, including the roof sheeting, timber purlins, oak composite screen, Corobrik breeze blocks and aluminium edge detailing. These layers create warmth, rhythm and depth while maintaining a clean and coordinated architectural expression.

The balcony and threshold details resolve the more technical requirements of the building. Waterproofing, screeded falls, tile finishes, drainage outlets, balustrade fixings and door thresholds are all carefully coordinated to ensure that the balcony performs correctly over time.

These are the types of junctions where architectural design and technical performance need to work together. The detail must look considered, but it must also drain correctly, protect the building fabric and be practical to construct.

Good architecture is not only about the overall form. It is also about the small, well resolved details that make the building work.

A closer look at a luxury residence we designed for Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.

This design presentation brings together the ground floor and first floor plans, elevations, 3D diagrams and rendered views to show the full architectural intent behind the home.

The plans help explain how the spaces are arranged, while the elevations and diagrams give a clearer understanding of the form, scale and architectural language. The renderings then bring it all together by showing the atmosphere of the interiors and outdoor living spaces.

The home is designed around generous open-plan living, warm natural materials, double-volume spaces, covered patios and framed views of the surrounding Stellenbosch landscape.

A contemporary Winelands residence shaped by light, views, comfort and everyday living.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ What if there was another way? We think great design deserves options.
We're sharing our second row housing concept animation for The Woods at Steyn City, Johannesburg, an alternative design direction for this exciting residential development within one of Johannesburg's most sought-after estates.

At Kunz Raubenheimer Architects, we believe that presenting a single concept and asking a developer to commit is not good enough. The best outcomes come from exploration, from having the courage to ask "what if we approached this differently?" and then actually showing what that looks like.

This animation does exactly that. Before any detailed drawings are produced, the developer can see a fully realised alternative: a different architectural language, a different streetscape, a different relationship between the buildings and the natural landscape that makes Steyn City so special. Side by side with our first concept, it gives the client something invaluable, a genuine choice, made with eyes wide open.

This is how we believe residential design should begin. Not with assumptions, but with clarity, options, and a shared vision that everyone can see and respond to.
We'd love to hear which direction resonates with you. Drop your thoughts in the comments below! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Seeing the vision before the blueprints exist. That's the power of great design communication.

We're excited to share this concept animation we created for The Woods at Steyn City, Johannesburg, a row housing development designed to bring a thoughtful balance of density, privacy, and natural beauty to one of Johannesburg's most prestigious estates.

At Kunz Raubenheimer Architects, we know that one of the most critical moments in any development project is getting everyone around the table aligned on a shared vision, and that's incredibly difficult to do with technical drawings alone. So before a single detailed drawing was produced, we created this walkthrough animation to bring the concept to life.

The developer can see exactly how the streetscape flows, how the facades relate to one another, how the landscaping integrates with the architecture, and how future residents will experience the space from the moment they arrive. Questions get answered early. Decisions get made with confidence. And the entire project moves forward on a much stronger footing.

This is the kind of upfront investment in communication that saves time, reduces costly changes down the line, and ultimately delivers a better product for everyone: developer, architect, and future homeowner alike.
We're proud of how this concept has come together, and we can't wait to share more as The Woods evolves. ๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿก Solis, Bryanston. Where precision meets luxury.

At Kunz Raubenheimer Architects, every line on a drawing is a decision. And every decision shapes the way a home is lived in.

The Type B unit at Solis, one of only eight full title luxury homes being developed by Rexco Developments on Cambridge Street, Bryanston, is now in full working drawing phase. What you see in this flythrough is not a concept. It is a fully resolved, technically documented home ready for construction.

Two generous storeys. A double volume living space. A PJ lounge. Four ensuite bedrooms. A covered patio, mud room, and staff accommodation. Balconies that open the first floor to light and air. A double garage integrated seamlessly into the lower ground floor.

Every window, every door, every ceiling, every energy compliance calculation is drawn, specified, and coordinated. This is architecture at its most rigorous and its most beautiful.

๐ŸŽฌ Watch the flythrough and see Solis come to life.

A residential to office conversion is never just about changing the use of a building. It is about understanding what is already there, what needs to be strengthened, and how each new layer can improve the way the building works.

For this office conversion in Alphen Park, Pretoria, we used 3D sectional diagrams to explain the construction methodology and the different components that make up the building envelope.

The diagrams show how the exposed steel portal frames, high painted ceilings, roof sheeting, clerestory glazing, timber screens, stone walls, polished concrete floors and insulated slab edges all come together. Each element plays a role in the final result, from structure and durability to natural light, shading, ventilation and thermal comfort.

They also help communicate the thinking behind the design in a clear and practical way. You can see how the building opens up internally, how the roof structure defines the spaces, and how the envelope responds to Pretoriaโ€™s climate through shade, airflow and material selection.

For us, this is where architecture becomes really interesting. The beauty of the project is not only in the final image, but in how all the parts are put together.

This flythrough explores the conversion of an existing house in Pretoria into a contemporary office space, together with two new apartments designed for young professionals.

A big focus of the project was creating workspaces that people actually enjoy being in. Spaces with good natural light, warm materials, comfortable proportions, and a sense of openness that makes the day feel a little better. Rather than feeling overly corporate, the design aims to create a more relaxed and inspiring working environment.

The animation also shows how the new apartments and office spaces work together on the site, bringing a more layered live-work dynamic to the property while giving the existing building a completely new lease on life.

Sometimes the success of a space is less about the finishes or the architecture itself, and more about how it makes you feel when you move through it.
