This is one of my favourite pics of my 5 year old as a baby. I held onto this jumper she’s wearing for a long time to commemorate this baby stage I loved so much. I held onto it at the bottom of a box in a dark store room. 🙈⁣

The KonMari Method®️ advocates honouring what we choose to keep, and that was no way to honour this memory. I brought it out and soon as Georgia saw it she wanted to try it on. She looked so cute squashed into this suit that we decided to recreate that look from the baby photo. ⁣

Through this fun exercise and these new photos, I’m honouring the memory of that baby that stole my sleep and my heart and made a joyful new memory honouring the silliness this wild child brings to our world. And with that, I don’t have a need to hold on to the physical suit anymore. ⁣

It was never about the suit anyway. ⁣

I can appreciate it without owning it - ⁣

One of my favourite benefits of the KonMari Method is that it’s a subtle habit changer. Especially shopping habits which are so easily influenced by our emotions. ⁣

When you experience this method, you naturally start to filter your decisions and your choices become intentional instead of impulsive or reactive. It’s a super power that saves you from making choices that don’t serve you.⁣

💡Pro tip: Instead of buying it, take a picture of it. It leads to appreciating it without needing to own it. ⁣

Joy can be found in unusual items. ⁣

While tidying up with a client, we came across a dead but otherwise perfectly intact arachnid behind her couch. Most people will shudder and send it to the bin as soon as possible, especially something big, hairy and leggy like this one, and normally I would too. ⁣

But this big shy ‘ol hairy guy, he was special. ⁣

He’s special because this specific type of harmless arachnid, although common in Botswana, never stands still long enough for you to get a good look at him. He moves too fast. All you see is a furry fuzzy sandy coloured streak zipping past you, and usually over you - they have little regard for personal space (their top speed is 16 km/h [10 mph] 🤓 ).⁣

Our deceased visitor was a solifuge and for the first time ever, we could marvel up close at his beautiful hairy physique. He has aliases (camel spider, wind scorpion and sun spider, all misleading names as it’s not a true spider or scorpion - I know riiight!), but over in our neck of the woods in Botswana, he’s affectionately called, wait for it.... the kalahari ferrari. ⁣

We figured as this guy survived intact in a house with dogs and cats (we decided he died of old age), he earned the right in her house to be filtered through a spark joy test, which he passed. ⁣

A year has gone by since she decided he sparks joy in her life and I’m told he’s still displayed in glass where we left him. ⁣

For her, this specimen represents the unique environment she loves living in. This is how tidying up with the KonMari Method reveals what you truly cherish in life. ⁣

Plus, arachnid displays make a good story too 😉⁣

I live in a small rural-ish town in Botswana where the lack of entertainment results in us socialising in person more. Many summer weekends are spent with friends enjoying the beauty of the Delta especially along the river. The one item everyone in the town takes with to the river is the kikoy. It’s used as a picnic blanket, a towel, a sarong (also, worn by the guys), a tablecloth, a baby blanket, a scarf and to cope with the heat a damp kikoy makes the best body cooler. ⁣

They’re 100% cotton so they’re thinner, lighter, take up a lot less room (storing and in the washing machine) and dries faster than a normal towel. We definitely own more kikoys than towels. We still have some pool towels though but I’ve made up my mind, this summer I’m not buying anymore pool towels and instead I’m phasing them out to replace with large cotton towels for pool and beach time, mainly because I’m over pool towels taking up so much space in bags, baskets and on shelves, even if I roll them. ⁣

Who’s with me? ⁣

My client curated hers by selecting only the most loved items. Give each subcategory it’s own home by using dividers or sturdy boxes. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

🎯The client’s goal: to minimise visual clutter. ⁣
🦾The challenge: retaining the cottage style she had lovingly curated in order to have items handy on open shelves and counters without it creating a visual overload. ⁣

Swipe 👉 to see the before.⁣

💡Here’s some takeaways from how we achieved the edit for a less cluttered space:⁣

✅ Visualise how you want your space to look, feel and how you want it to serve you and anyone else using the space. Get really specific. ⁣
✅ Categorise: in this kitchen we categorised by ⁣
🔸type (only grains and legumes in glass jars on the open shelf), ⁣
🔸colour (the contents of glass jars in the same colour palette), ⁣
🔸frequency of use (sticking to items that are a given will be used frequently when cooking the same dish like salt + pepper, spoon rest, wooden spoons) ⁣
🔸convenience for little ones (putting their breakfast cereal and powdered milk at arms reach to encourage independence). ⁣
✅You don’t need 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 at arms length. Just because you have counter space/that magnetic knife strip/S hooks/tools that can be hung etc, doesn’t mean you have to utilize all your options. Select what you use the most often or makes most sense to have at the ready. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

💡Have you ever asked yourself what you want to be surrounded with?

🔎 When you think about the spaces you live in...your home, your dorm room, your office space...do they reflect what matters most to you?

🤷‍♀️ Does it matter?

💛 Heck yes it matters. It matters because you matter. The environment you create at home and even at work, supports your life. And your life matters.

🎈It either uplifts you and brings you joy or weighs you down.

🧨Clutter, disorder, that junk drawer (you know the one), it weighs you down and drains you. It overwhelms you and you don’t know where to start to dig yourself out of it. The more you tidy, the more you find different hiding places for the items.

🕊There is a way out. And it starts with choosing to feed your life with joy.

✨Follow me as I share how I use Marie Kondo's KonMari Method™️, rooted in the philosophy of choosing to surround yourself with only that which sparks joy for you and letting go, with gratitude, of all the rest.
