When asked to give her thoughts about the importance of women in the architecture and built environment sphere, Mireille said, “I feel that women play a crucial role in the architecture and building industry, bringing diverse perspectives and innovative solutions to the field. Our contributions help reshape the built environment, addressing both aesthetic and functional needs with a unique approach, women have a better eye for details and consumer behaviour. By challenging traditional design paradigms and advocating for inclusive, sustainable practices, women in architecture drive progress and enhance the quality of spaces we inhabit. Our presence not only promotes gender diversity but also enriches the profession with varied experiences and insights, ultimately leading to more thoughtful, equitable, and creative architectural solutions. As the industry continues to evolve, the influence of women remains pivotal in shaping a more inclusive and forward-thinking future for architecture and construction.” Thank you for providing us the opportunity of this enjoyable collaboration, Mireille!

Mireille Koster of Archiway Architects is a highly motivated and creative person to work with. She always strives to provide spatial solutions which are beautiful, inclusive, and sustainable. She noted a few points about the mall, saying “For Moratiwa Crossing we have incorporated local artists to make benches, paint the walls to the ablution facilities with vibrant murals and to make plants from recycled steel. The children’s play area has been created out of recycled rubber from tyres”.

As we conclude our women’s month feature of collaborations with women Architects on commercial retail projects, we look at the recent upgrade and expansion of Moratiwa Crossing Shopping Centre in Limpopo. We had the privilege of collaborating with Mireille Koster of Archiway Architects on Moratiwa Crossing, a 25 000m² community shopping centre, with rental opportunities for more than 80 tenants.

When asked to share her thoughts on the importance of women in architecture and the built environment sphere, Rosemary Orthner said, “In Ghana’s construction industry, the presence of women remains limited. However, within the architecture profession, we are witnessing a growing number of women making their mark. Personally, having grown up in my father’s construction business, I became accustomed to this environment from an early age. I always believed that with education and dedication, I could excel as an Architect. I’ve realized my dream, and I encourage more women to pursue their passions, defying societal expectations.”

The various uses of the Kumasi Mall development were arranged in such a way as to create a shaded square, which would be enlivened by retail, restaurants, and the hotel restaurant at ground level. The balance of the retail space was intended to create a ‘streetscape’ linking the hotel and office uses. Ultimately, the development did not proceed to construction, but it was nevertheless a valuable design collaboration between Rosemary Orthner from OOA and Co-Arc.

A woman who has consistently been wonderful to collaborate with over many years is Rosemary Orthner of Orthner Orthner & Associates (OOA) in Ghana. Rosemary is dynamic, visionary, and is an asset to any project team. She identified a potential development opportunity in Kumasi, noting that the area was lacking a formal retail space at the time. From there, she engaged with us to design a mixed-use development comprising of offices, retail, conferencing, and a hotel.

When asked to reflect on the importance of being a woman in the construction industry, Jasmina said, “Based on my personal experience in the Botswana environment where we have very few female architects, I have observed that women bring a more holistic and all-inclusive approach to architectural services. As Design Team leaders, they are not hesitant to ask questions and advance their knowledge. They also bring the team together on a more equal basis, giving a chance to all to safely bring forward their concerns. Their innate sense of responsibility and accountability goes a long way to deliver projects at the highest standards. This is in contrast with many male architects and project managers who feel that they need to 'lead the pack' with a strong hand and single-minded determination. This can severely impact and impede the project by creating a hostile environment.”

Thank you, Jasmina, for your dedication to the built environment industry, and the continued collaboration with us under the Paledi Co-Arc banner.

We recently collaborated with Jasmina and her right-hand man, Ngwabi Mannathoko, on The Fields Mall in the new CBD district of Gaborone. The 26 000m² mall, which was opened in 2022, hosts 70 tenants with anchors including Spar, Woolworths and PnP. Its location in the new CBD makes it a highly valuable addition to the commercial retail landscape in Gaborone.

During the remainder of women’s month, we would like to celebrate the women collaborators who have enabled some of our recent commercial retail projects.

Jasmina Telic, an architect from Paledi Incorporated in Gaborone, Botswana, has been an integral team member and site leader on numerous projects as part of Paledi Co-Arc. She has a reputation as a no-nonsense, stickler for detail on site, which is an invaluable trait in the male-dominated construction industry. She is also a yoga and mindfulness teacher and uses her learning and techniques from these interests to apply impartiality and equanimity to a project environment.

Lerato’s art journey began when she was diagnosed with dyslexia and her mother’s hunt for a new school landed her in an art school. Her subject matter has often portrayed and championed women, inspired by the many women in her community and life who have been such constant pillars of support for her. On this Women’s Day, it seems apt to celebrate her, and thank her for her contribution to the artwork on display in The Leonardo.

Lerato’s “Fabric of the Universe” mixed-media tapestry is a staggering 17 meters long and is accompanied by an additional 4 x 4m piece. The medium of the work is paint and needle embroidery on a black fabric background, and the artwork represents the microscopic through to the cosmic. It was completed in three sections, over the course of two months, and with two assistants, Lerato worked on the tapestry everywhere to complete it in time: her kitchen table, her sister and parents’ houses, and even the back seat of a car.

Another maker who has made art on a grand scale for one of our buildings is Lerato Motau. Lerato hails from Vilakazi Street in Soweto. The street’s historical significance in the South African political landscape has inspired her and some of her work. She was commissioned by the Trinity Session to create an artwork for the space directly outside the conference room in The Leonardo in Sandton.
