House O, Hurlingham

A look back at this new build set on a long and skinny site, with limited northern exposure. The layout was born from a need to introduce courtyards to remedy the primarily East/West orientation and carve out north-facing spaces. It produced the most wonderful interaction between the garden and the home. There is no feeling of being squashed on the site at all as it all is able to breathe through the beautiful courtyard! The bedroom wing is raised above the beautiful feature stone wall, again with a northern orientation, but instead of the double storey aspect seeming over-powering, it instead just seems to float above and be anchored below by the wall.
I really do love this home!

House N, Forest Town

I loved this relatively small, but massively impactful rejigging of the interior space to produce a kitchen, scullery, pantry, dining and lounge area that are all connected, but have their own place in the home. The quality of light throughout this space was not great so that was a big consideration throughout, as well as maintaining the homes collected feel, whilst upgrading the fittings and finishes to something more contemporary.

House on the Hill

A dramatic turn around for this old home perched on a hill in the Westcliff! The spaces were all disconnected and crying out for a bit of personality! Not much remained as we gave the whole property a facelift, and will follow this post with another as there is too much to share! I loved introducing a European flair to this house as a nod to its owner, connecting the garden to the home and flooding the house with light! It really was a complete joy to work on this project!

A dramatic turn around for this family home, with a fun and challenging brief to include a yoga studio that could be operational in a way that did not affect the goings-on of the family. The home was desperate for light and better flow and there was a lot of brickwork taken out or punctured through. North light was tricky to introduce, but through the introduction of the feature window in the kitchen, we were able to grab as much of it as we could!

This project will always be a favourite of mine and mostly very grateful for the opportunity to get to know the family and farmyard that now call this house a home!

I think one of my favourite things to scroll through on Instagram is a good old ‘Before & After’ series! And yet despite my portfolio being almost entirely renovation work and FULL of before and after snaps, I am so bad at showing them on here!

KITCHENS…

The heart of the home, a place for gathering, making, connecting, sharing and for most of us…the place our kids use to do homework!

It’s a space that I put a huge amount of thought into as it is often a great way to express the families ‘vibe’ and it really is an expression of the mechanics of the family. But, you need to get a kitchen ‘right’…Besides looking good, it needs to work and the practical side to cooking and food storage etc needs to be behind every aesthetic expression.

It’s a complete jol designing a kitchen. I hope you enjoy scrolling through a few that I have completed over the years that have bought me and their owners much joy!

House Mullins…the space that ties it all together…the Patio!

It’s large and in charge and rather than feeling like an ‘outdoor’ space, it just feels like an extension of the inside, connecting all the common spaces together and then connecting itself to the expansive lawn in front! I also made a little pass through space from the braai counters to the scullery as well as from the kitchen area to the outdoor counter….I knew once everyone was settled into this space no-one would be up for a walk to the dishwasher 😁

This house is all about light, volume and connections- between the spaces as well as between the inside and outside!

House Mullins…the evolution of the elevation! Scroll to the end to see the before pics!

I absolutely adore this home, which patiently awaited its transformation leaving little behind other than a floor and wall here and there!

The east-west axis of the home makes for beautiful, but challenging light that I did my best to harness yet control! The sliding timber screens have been a beautiful addition to the patio space to control the directness of the setting sun.
