Many beginner gardeners, or landscapers for that matter, don't think enough about garden colour schemes. They just want a lot of colour - the more the better.

Combining colours that work is a bold move and different colours will evoke different moods. There's no rush here! Take your time to see what works. Starting with one main colour in your garden is totally ok at first.

One piece of advice: Take as much colour cues from clothes, home dècor and art. You can find inspiration in so many places.

Learning how to grow a dahlia plant will likely lead to a hobby, as the spectacular blooms are quite addictive and the presence of one or two will lead to plenty more in subsequent seasons.

What an absolutely wonderful day at the Keith Kirsten Horticulture International (Pty) Ltd River Lodge Farm. It was such a good day sharing in this passion with like-minded individuals.

It is truly amazing to see how the detailed gardening work of world-renowned horticulturist, Keith Kirsten, not only sustains the rougher details of nature, but also incorporates the detailed touch of a gardener to further enhance the beauty of this location.

Salvia numerosa 'New Dimension' aka Woodland Sage.

I love incorporating selections of purple plants ranging from lilac to dark violet in my natural designs. The Salvia genus is a favorite among us gardeners as it displays vigorous growth with medium effort.

Perennial sage looks wonderful when planted in ornamental borders, producing summer-long displays of spiky, nectar-rich flowers. This mass of colour attracts even the most oblivious passerby.

Sweet nectar and bright florals, the Tecoma capensis also known as the 'Cape Honeysuckle' is a fast growing flowering shrub in the Bignoniaceae family.

The nectar-rich blooms attract nectar-drinking sunbirds and is also host to butterflies that include the 'Barker's Smokey Blue' and the 'Common Blue'.

Plant breeders have now developed a number of differently coloured Tecoma capensis cultivars in shades ranging from deep red through to orange, apricot, gold and lemon yellow and even a marvellous salmon-pink. The blooms of all these cultivars stand above the foliage and contrast superbly with the glossy green leaves. The cultivars tend to be smaller than the original orange-bloomed Tecoma capensis.

This is the 'Euphorbia pulcherrima' that is also known worldwide as the red poinsettia. This spectacular and popular Christmas plant is native to Central America. The red-coloured "flowers" on the plant are actually highly coloured leaves called bracts.
