Winter tips for your garden.

This is the time to prune your grape vines, wisteria and roses.
If roses and grape vines have suffered from fungal attack, spray with lime Sulphur and remove leaves.
Roses can now be moved if need be or bare root specimens can be planted into the garden.

This is a good time to plant new trees and shrubs as well as the pruning of existing ones.

Fallen leaves can be left to serve as a mulch in garden beds unless plants have suffered from fungal disease.

Feed citrus trees in late winter, two thirds of the years fertilizer.

Lawns - keep mowing as necessary, with the mower blade slightly higher that in summer.

Flowerbeds - overgrown perennials can be devided or cut back.
New beds can be prepared for spring planting.
Composting and mulching of existing beds will allow for healthy new growth when spring arrives.

Vegetable gardens - harvest the last of the summer crops if not done yet.
Dig over beds adding well rotted organic matter. Winter crops can be planted or allow beds to rest.
Plan summer crops for rotation planting.
Include companion plants such as borage, yarrow and nasturtiums. Edible flowers are a good addition to vegetable beds as they attract benificial insects.

Medicinal plant for this month of July.
Red hibiscus - Hibiscus rosa-sinensis
Flowers can be picked at any time. Use in a tea by pouring a cup of boiling water over one finely chopped flower. Allow to stand for a few minutes, stir frequently, strain and sip.
This medicinal tea helps to ease coughs, colds, and to lower fever, relax muscles and abdominal pains, release colic and bloating.

Formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, trichloroethylene, and ammonia — an average home has all of these dangerous toxins, according to a NASA Clean Air study. It’s good that we actually have big helpers on our side — indoor plants can absorb up to 90% of these pollutants and chemicals.
