An enclosure can look beautiful and still be missing something important.

Hides give many reptiles places where they can feel secure.

For snakes such as corn snakes and ball pythons, Reptilia’s care guidance recommends providing hides at both the warmer and cooler areas of the enclosure.

That means the animal does not have to choose between feeling secure and regulating its temperature.

When planning a habitat, think about what the animal needs, not only what looks good to us.

Reptile keepers, we want to hear from you.

What was the first reptile you ever kept?

Was it a corn snake, ball python, leopard gecko, bearded dragon, something completely different, or are you still researching your first one?

And for the experienced keepers, what is one thing you wish someone had explained to you at the beginning?

Meet the Corn Snake.

Corn snakes can reach around 150 cm in length and may live for up to 20 years in captivity, so bringing one home is a long-term commitment.

They need more than a tank and a water bowl.

A suitable enclosure should provide space to move, a warm-to-cool temperature gradient, secure hiding places and appropriate environmental monitoring.

One of the most useful questions to ask before buying any snake is:

“Can I provide what this animal will need when it is fully grown?”

MYTH: “The enclosure feels warm, so the temperature must be right.”

FACT: Your hand is not an accurate thermometer.

Reptiles rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature, which means proper temperature monitoring is an important part of their care. Reptilia’s care sheets repeatedly recommend measuring enclosure temperatures rather than guessing.

A thermometer tells you what is happening.
A thermostat helps control the heat source.

They do different jobs, and both matter.

Thinking about getting your first reptile?

Start with the enclosure, not the animal.

Heating, lighting, temperature monitoring, hides, substrate, feeding equipment and the correct enclosure all need to be considered before your new pet comes home.

A good setup helps you create the right environment from day one, rather than trying to fix problems afterwards.

One of the most common issues we see with new reptile setups is heat equipment running without a thermostat.

Heat mats, lamps, and ceramic emitters don’t have an “off switch” on their own. Once they’re on, they’ll just keep heating — even if the enclosure slowly creeps into dangerous temperatures.

Because reptiles rely entirely on external heat, this can lead to stress, dehydration, burns, or long-term health problems without obvious warning signs.

A safe setup always includes:

- The correct heat source for the species
- A thermostat to regulate it
- A thermometer so you can see real temperatures

This isn’t being fussy — it’s basic reptile safety. 🦎

If you’re unsure about your heat setup, bring photos or pop in — we’re happy to help.
