Wian Mouton and Gieliam Botma recently represented Bosman Adama at the PIWI International Symposium in Freiburg, Germany. The focus was on the breeding, viticulture, vinification and marketing of the PIWI winegrapes, the new crossbred, fungus resistance varietals.

These varietals require minimal chemical intervention to control damaging fungal diseases such as Downy and Powdery Mildew, and Black Rot yet still produce beautiful, well-balanced wines.

As the latest member of the PIWI International organisation, Bosman Adama serves as the gateway to the various breeders of these varieties, assisting them to import, evaluate and introduce the varieties to the South African wine industry.

SMALL DELIVERY, BIG STORY.🌱

Today our first batch of pistachio rootstock left the nursery for an evaluation site in Prieska, marking an exciting step for the Cultivar Management Division.

Although Bosman Adama is internationally known as a leading grapevine nursery, this division also supports IP holders across a range of crops, including promising newcomers like pistachios. These rootstocks reflect our commitment to responsible cultivar introduction and long‑term crop development in South Africa.

Agter elke gesonde wingerdstok lê noukeurige laboratoriumwerk. Vir die volgende drie weke toets ons span honderde wingerd monsters vir die Netelblaar virus, ’n proses wat presisie in elke stap verg. Hierdie toetse gaan nie net oor voldoening aan die Plantverbeteringswet nie; dit is ons verbintenis aan jou.

Vir produsente beteken dit: virus getoetsde plantmateriaal, verminderde oesverliese en wingerde wat vir dekades floreer. Gesonde plantmateriaal beskerm jou belegging en die toekoms van Suid-Afrika se druiwebedryf, van wyn tot tafeldruiwe.

Om wingerdstokkies vir ons kliënte voor te berei, is ’n toegewyde taak. By Bosman Adama sien ons elke seisoen as ‘n kans om nóg beter te doen. Elke seisoen bring nuwe geleenthede om te toets, te leer en aan te pas.

Vanjaar toets ons verskillende tipes waks wat die entlas beskerm. Buiten die verskillende kleure, verskil die wakssoorte in chemiese samestelling ook in hoe hulle vog behou, temperatuur beheer en hormonale invloed. Al hierdie faktore speel ’n belangrike rol in hoe vinnig en gesond die bostok en onderstok saamgroei.

Wanneer ons deur die jong kwekerygronde stap en die helder waks kleure sien, word ons herinner aan ons visie: Toegewyd tot Beter.

As wingerdkwekery is ons trots daarop dat ons voortdurend streef na verbetering, sodat elke wingerdstokkie wat ons uitstuur, is sterk, gesond en vol potensiaal vir ons kliënte.🌱

Na ’n lang, nat winter is plantseisoen hier en in volle swang. Ons kliënte het hul geënte stokkies kom afhaal om nuwe wingerde regoor die Wes-Kaap, Oranjerivier en selfs in Namibië aan te plant.

By die Bosman Adama Kwekery werk ons egter reeds hard om volgende jaar se wingerde voor te berei. Alles begin met hoëgehalte plantmateriaal wat met die hand op filoksera-bestande onderstok geënt word, ’n vaardige tegniek wat al vir geslagte lank op ons plaas toegepas word.

Sodra dit geënt is, gaan die jong wingerdstok na die kalluskamers, waar dit die eerste vier weke in ’n beheerde omgewing deurbring sodat die entlas kan saamgroei.

Daarna volg Plant-tyd in die goed voorbereide, verweerde graniet grond, waar die stokkies die volgende nege maande deurbring om sterk en gesonde wortels en lote te ontwikkel.

Met byna 12 miljoen wingerd stokkies wat in meer as 350 kombinasies van onderstok en bostok geënt word, verseker ons dat elke kliënt die perfekte materiaal ontvang vir hul unieke ‘terroir’ vereistes.🌱
