We once painted for someone and they nearly had a heart attack when we started thinking it's not the exact color they had chosen. We had to sweet talk our beloved client to wait for it to dry as well as explaining the lighting effect on different shades.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬?🤔🖊

You picked the perfect colour and painted it, and now it looks slightly off?

💡 Paint dries differently to how it looks when wet.
Most paints appear a bit lighter or patchy at first but settle into their true colour as they dry.

💡 Lighting changes everything.
Natural light vs artificial light can completely shift how a colour looks throughout the day.

💡 Surface + prep matter.
New plaster, rough walls, or uneven surfaces can absorb paint differently, affecting the final finish.

💡 Sheen plays a role.
Matt, satin, and gloss finishes all reflect light differently, which can make the same colour look slightly different.

💡 Two coats make the difference.
That first coat is just the base and the second coat is where the colour really comes to life.

👉 Always test your colour on the wall and check it at different times of day before committing.

Rushing your second coat? That’s where things start going wrong 👀

Here’s what you need to know:

💡 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀
Usually ready for a second coat in 2–4 hours (but always check the tin as not all paints are the same)

💡 𝗢𝗶𝗹-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀
Usually 4 hours or more (again, always check the tin!)

💡 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 = 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴
If it’s chilly or damp, drying time increases.

💡 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻 = 𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀
Painting over a coat that’s not fully dry can cause lifting, patchiness, or uneven colour.

💡 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗿𝘆 = 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘁
Just because it feels dry doesn’t mean it’s cured enough for the next layer.

👉 𝗜𝗳 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝘁, 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿.
Good paintwork is 50% patience, 50% product.
