Recently I did a talk about maintenance at a Garden Club. I had some great feedback so I thought I would share with you some of the tips I gave them.
Start by tidying up the garden shade. Maybe add some shelves or hooks to lessen the clutter on the floor.
Make a list of tools, chemicals and fertilizers that need to be purchased
Dispose of any out-of-date and toxic chemicals and fertilizers and make sure to buy organic when you replace
Get all the tools and machines fixed, sharpened, oiled etc.
Check that your gardener has a decent uniform, work boots and hat. As well as a decent pair of secateurs.
Make a schedule for your gardener. Monday to Saturday – clean the pool, turn the compost, sweep the verandah etc
Include a watering timetable, divided into areas and times. Avoid watering in the mid day heat.
Diarise feeding days for roses, fruit trees, flower pots and hanging baskets.
Get your veggie garden into a rotation system
On Sunday evenings, walk around your garden with a notebook and make a list of things to do for the following week, including any plants that need to be purchased.
Get creative and start planning the next project or new bed
Have fun and enjoy, our gardens are our sanctuary.
